Low Amniotic Fluid?

I'm worried.

Like the crazy person I am, I went and requested my lab & ultrasound report from my ER visit last week.

My ultrasound report said my AFI was 5.6 cm, which I googled because I had no clue what it meant, come to find its a measurement of amniotic fluid and that anything below a 5 is a condition called oligohydramnios which can cause major problems for the baby (or in my case, babies). I also read the median AFI for 20 weeks is 14 cm... way higher than my 5.6 cm.

The ER doctor said everything looked fine and I had my 20 week A/S a few days later at the OB and nobody there mentioned it either... should I be concerned?

I've been extremely thirsty in the past few weeks, drinking almost a gallon of water a day, could this be why? Is my body trying to compensate for lack of amniotic fluid?

Then I figure, if I'm drinking this much water and my AFI is low, what would it be like if I wasn't drinking so much? Even worse? I was definitely on my gallon-a-day water intake last week when this measurement was done.

I don't know what to think. This is my first pregnancy so of course I have nothing to compare it to so I figured I'd ask here. Anyone have experience with this? Or advice? :/

ETA: I have not had any "leakage" (that I'm aware of). Also, I just re-read the report. Twin A's AFI is 5.6 cm & Twin B's is 3.5cm :/

I am definitely calling my doctor tomorrow but wanted to hear anyone else's experience with this in the meantime.

  • I think if it was concerning your Doctor would have mentioned something to you.

  • I have no personal experience with this, but I'd be really surprised if it was an issue since you had you a/s a few days later and no one mentioned it.

Definitely call your doc in the morning for some peace of mind but try and relax tonight knowing that the last time a professional looked at your babes, they said everything was fine.

  • I don't know if it's true but, I've heard that resting when you can and drinking crazy amounts of fluids can help with low amniotic fluids. I am not sure but maybe worth a try. I would still give the a call in the morning worrying is not good for LO.

  • The numbers may be different for twins. If your doctor isn't concerned, you shouldn't worry yourself about it. Call tomorrow for an explanation but then move on or you'll drive yourself nuts.

BFP#2 7/3/13.  U/S at 6w4d showed 1 heartbeat at 127 bmp and 2 empty sacs.  MMC discovered at 10w4d.  D&C 8/27/13.  Pathology showed normal boy.  Missing our babies every day.
    BFP#3 10/29/13!  Beta#1 at 4w5d - 2141, beta#2 at 5w1d - 7651!  U/S 11/21/13 showed baby measuring 2 days ahead with a heartbeat of 127 bmp!
  • With DS I had low amniotic fluid and my doctor mentioned it to me right away. I also had low fluid at my 17 week u/s and she addressed that as well. They don't take those things lightly so I'm sure that if your OB was concerned he/she would have said something. And like PP have said, if you're concerned, call. And the numbers may be different for twins versus just one baby.

  • I wouldn't worry yourself silly.  If the ER doctor said everything looked fine, AND everything was fine at your a/s then I'm sure there's no cause for alarm.  You're having twins, so you are being monitored very closely and they would tell you right away if there was cause for concern.  Call your doctor tomorrow and have them explain the numbers to you to put your mind at ease.  I know it's hard, try to relax!   :)
