Pregnant after 35

EEEK! Fibroid!

So, just got back from the OB appointment, first one after the AS. Everything is cool, no issues but they have found a large fibroid and was told by the OB that it was 7 inches big!  She may have said anterior, not sure.  On reflection me and DH wonder if she meant 7cm but anyway, it's big and may mean a C-Section depending on where it decides to move to as everything grows. I'm not worried about a CS but wondered if any other ladies have had a fibroid issue? I had fibroids removed in September last year so this sucker must have grown really fast!

  • I don't have any advice or experience, but I wanted to offer my {{hugs}} and vibes.

  • I also have Fibroids..... pretty small so they've never been an issue. I also think they must have meant 7cm. I say if it makes you feel better, maybe call your office and talk to the nurse to confirm. I am sure they will keep an eye on either way. :)
  • Thanks, ladies. She must have meant 7cms - a 7inch fibroid in there with the baby would be crazy. She was almost saying, but not confirming of course, that it's really very low and not likely to move enough to avoid a C-Section, so it was like a warning that it's likely. That's fine. I think she'll scan me and check next month at my next visit as she said she'll be watching it. I am getting very low down pain on the left, sometimes crampy mild period-like but sometimes stabby/sharp. The OB said that will be the fibroid but didn't seem concerned, there's no bleeding or anything else, just annoying pain. Did anyone have pain with the fibroid?

I can't believe how fast this has grown - it's like a weed or something!

  • I have 3, but they are relatively small. Doc said they shouldn't harm anything. They are actually sitting above the uterus.
  • I've done a fair amount of Googling and to my surprise, it's been helpful and hasn't freaked me out. The OB's lack of concern reassured me too and I know they'll keep an eye on it now. There is definitely some pain associated which seems to be quite normal, depending on the size and location but it's not bad. I'll ask more questions about it next visit, I was a little thrown when she told me and my mind went blank.

  • I have one, possibly two, but I guess they are relatively small and have stayed out of the way.  Didn't cause any issues with DD#1 and haven't done so with DD#2 either.  It's another risk factor they add to your sheet (!) and they will monitor you for things like premature shortening of the cervix, etc... but hopefully nothing too big of a deal.  Congrats on your pregnancy, bummer you had a bunch removed so recently.

And likely she meant 7 cm - A friend of mine did have one "the size of a grapefruit" so they can get really big, but I don't suspect the OB would have been so nonchalant if it was that size!

  • I have one too, and my OB doesn't seem concerned but the sono tech wouldn't quit talking about it at both of my scans. I think she spent more time measuring the fibroid than my baby. Its bad enough I'm AMA...
  • Interesting... my sono tech didn't even mention it, the OB told me and kinda grimaced that it was there and might mean a CS. It was like she thought I might be upset with that or something lol. I did mean to say before though that the OB measured my tummy and said my uterus was bigger than it should be, due to the alien fibroid nesting in there and that would explain the very large belly. It's 16 years since I was pregnant so I hadn't even thought that maybe my belly was on the big side.  I'm totally unconcerned as it's been easy to research and find there is nothing to worry about. What I am miffed about is that the pain so far is like mild but annoying period cramps and I was looking forward to not having that for a few months!
