1st Trimester

Exercising!!! Any suggestions

Before I got pregnant I was attending aerobics and Aqua Zumba/fitness 6 days a week. I absolutely enjoyed it. Well yesterday I left swim class early because of how tired I felt but I did get 30 minutes in. Today I went to my athletic intervals class and for the warm-up she made us walk around the parking lot (which by the way isn't very big) 2 x. About 5minutes in I became very exhausted. So again I left class early! If I just walk on the treadmill it feels like I'm not doing much. I would like to stay active as possible. Does anyone have ideas on how I could still get a high impact work that maybe wouldn't drain me? I realize this is probably only wishful thinking.

  • I'd say cycle or the elliptical. But you're likely going to get worn out very easily, especially in early pregnancy. I'm 6 weeks and I'm exhausted walking up 3 flights of stairs.

  • I went the the gym this morning and was surprised with how exhausting my already-toned-down workout was.  I don't remember being this winded so early when I was pregnant with my DD.  I'm just happy to be finding time to exercise.

  • It'll get better as you move toward the 2nd trimester until the baby starts taking up lung space in the 3rd. Go easy on yourself and do what you can. This is my second pregnancy and it seems like it's going the same as the first so I won't be exercising til about 15 weeks other than walks around the neighborhood.
  • Honestly, don't push yourself. I learned that quickly. Only do what you can and know that any exercise is good exercise! You're growing a person and your job is to nurture and help that person's growth! I'm 11 weeks on Sunday and I just started running again, granted it's been MISERABLE trying to find alternatives but running and feeling great is way better than running and feeling like crap afterwards!
  • I had been running and light weight training 5-6 days a week up until last week.  My doctor has told me I can continue doing what I had been, but not to push myself too hard.  This past week I have been so completely exhausted I just can't find the energy.  I'm going to listen to my body on this one and just rest.  Making a little person takes a lot of work!  I can always get back into the swing of it when I'm feeling better.  Good Luck!

  • I'm only 4+ weeks in, but I am doing 15 min HIIT (30:30) on the elliptical twice an week and strength training three times a week. I def didn't push myself as much today, but I still tried to complete the workout. We'll see if I can keep it up. I used to cycle between 3 and 7 mph but today I did 2.6 to 6. I got my heart rate up to my target, so I feel like I'm still accomplishing something.

  • The thing I have noticed immediately is my tendency to get gassed (winded) so fast! I have kept up some really rigorous workouts though and just focused in maintaining my breath and a conversation! Do what you can but know you are strong!

Like the others have said you may just need to tone down your workouts at this stage. At least until your energy levels are back up. I used to do crossfit between 4 and 6 times a week and worked out very intensely. Now I barely have the energy to take a 20 minute leisurely walk. I've just had to accept that I just can't work out right now. I go for a walk on good days when I'm feeling ok and on bad days where I'm really nauseas and battling to keep my eyes open I just say 'to hell with it' and go to bed lol. I'm hoping when I hit the 2nd trimester I'll have a bit more energy and will be able to do a little more but for now I'm pretty close to being a couch potato and that's ok.

  • I ran 3 miles the day of taking my test to confirm.  This week, I feel like I can barely keep my eyes open.  I've walked a few times, but that's it.  If anything, walking is great.

I have several 5k's I want to do in the next couple of months.  I will confirm with my Dr. before I do it.  Or heck, even if I can.  Right now I just want to curl up on the couch and sleep!
