Cloth Diapering

Smaller NB dipes

I recently found out I'm having this baby by 34 weeks at the latest, so it looks like investing in a NB stash will be well worth it. DD was only in disposables for a few weeks before using our OS stash, so I have no experience with NB diapers.

My question is which NB brands/styles run smaller & fit extra skinny thighs best? I'm aware he won't even fit NB sizes for awhile, but I'm hoping to start as soon as we can.

Our current OS stash includes pockets, Flips, fitteds/covers & an AIO. I have a few prefolds I stuff in pockets, but I have no experience with special folds or snappis. I don't mind a mix, but I'd like some Aplix pockets or AIOs for middle of the night changes. Thanks for any advice!

Re: Smaller NB dipes

  • My LO was 5 lbs 11ozs. I like our Lil Joey's... They are super tiny and were really easy to start out on. Also the GMD NB prefolds and the Bummis Super Lite cover have been great because they're tiny. I have a few other NB covers (Rumparoos and Blueberry mini coveralls) but they're extra bulky right now and the Bummis in small is the prefect fit so far.

My son was barely over 6 pounds with skinny legs. Your baby will probably be smaller, but I think the Bummis Super Brite NB covers would fit well. I used preemie prefolds tri-folded with the back flaired out for more coverage.

ETA our Lil Joey's didn't fit right away, and when they did, he peed too much by then. :(

  • I agree, my RaRz and blueberry mini coverall are bigger. I loved my Super Brite NB covers for my skinny guy. If you are interested in used I still have three covers that I want to sell.

  • Preemie prefolds and thirsties XS or Bummis XS covers fit alright even with a bit of bulk on my 4lb baby.

I second reading over gmd's preemie cd-ing section.

  • my guy was 5lbs 9oz. The smallest AIO that we had, and I loved, were the NB imagine bamboo AIO. They were the first diapers my guy wore, and had the best fit. I believe they say they fit starting at 5 lbs and I would believe it. Maybe even smaller if you get the aplix closure. I liked that these fit great at birth, and fit all the way till 3+ months and I never had to add absorbancy.

Our Lil Joeys were the best fit for DS's skinny legs.

We used green mountain NB on my baby.  She was born at 37 weeks, so not super tiny, but my tiniest of five.  She was 6 pounds 3 ounces.  She was just under six when we brought her home from the hospital.  It worked for us.
