No taking selfies w/ friends!! j/k! Oh the usual....don't share hats, hairbrushes, coats, etc. Lice are spread by contact (they can't fly and they don't last long if they aren't feeding) so being aware and keeping one's personal space is probably the best prevention.
Shampoo with tea tree oil, or actual tea tree oil, during an outbreak we put DDs hair up and drown it in hairspray{she looks like an extra from a Robert Palmer video}
But most importantly, start young and teach that you do not share hats, helmets, brushes, play with each other's hair, etc.
Shampoo with tea tree oil. Keep hair up in braids or a bun. You can also use hairspray to prevent the flyaways that lice can climb onto.
I just read an article in the newspaper that lice are become increasingly resistant to over the counter lice treatments. It is taking 2-3 tries to get rid of them using those treatments. It is better to get one of the newer prescriptions from a doctor if someone does end up with lice in your family.
Dd just got it 2 weeks ago from a classmate. I was so grossed out. Thankfully the store bought stuff worked. I've been putting the tea tree oil in her shampoo and not letting her wear her hair down. I try and braid it as much as possible.

Blehhh...I feel like there is no way to prevent it. Once one kid gets it, that crap spreads like wildfire. Off to go scratch my head now from this post.
Ick. I discovered I had lice when DD2 was only 2 weeks old!!! So fucking disgusting!!! I was working at the time at a womens/kids shelter so my guess is I picked it up there while watching the children.
After that I put tea tree oil in my shampoo and I heard that they are turned off by coconut so I used coconut shampoo/conditioner.
I couldn't use the prescription since I was nursing and DD2 was still so new that I didn't want to doom my supply. I combed my hair A LOT with the lice comb! Also someone told me to use the brown listerine and let that soak in your hair for a few hours then follow it up with a vinegar rinse. I swear after doing that and combing a lot it took care of it. But yeah it took a good 3-4 weeks until I wasn't combing out nits. I wouldn't wish lice on anyone.
Hope she doesn't get them! I am dreading the day they have an outbreak at DD1's school

I worked at a youth psychiatric hospital after college and they treated the kids there with olive oil. It smothers the eggs and kills them. The kids heads had to wrapped in saran wrap for 20-30 minutes or something as well.

It also makes me itch. Why do we itch when we read certain things?

We used Cetaphil when we had them last spring, and it worked well. It smothers them, and is less toxic than the chemical treatments.
