Low platelets = Put to sleep to have c-section

Just wondering if anyone has ever heard of this. My platelets have been going down steadily since I've been pregnant. I will be having a RCS. My doctor said that I can't have an epidural due to the low platelets and will have to be put to sleep. My husband won't be able to be in the room. We will both miss the birth of our son. My doctor is very sweet and said she'll take lots of pics when he's first born, but it's obviously not the same. I am so upset!

Re: Low platelets = Put to sleep to have c-section

  • Damn!
I had a platelet count of 104...they told me I was at risk for not having an epi. They usually don't risk one under 100. (I was diagnosed with HELLP)
I was very fortunate to stay above 100 but had to be induced at 35wks 4days because it was more dangerous having baby in than out.

I went in to have a vaginal delivery 2 days later, 26mins of pushing.

I'm so sorry you and your DH will be missing the birth. Obviously the drs know what they're doing and it's the best choice for you and your baby. It's so difficult when things don't go the way you planned :(
It's nice that your dr is so understanding and will do that for you!

  • I also was diagnosed with HELLP n had the possibility of no epi. I was also told if under 100 no epi but luckily mine were up to 130 on day of induction. So sorry you will miss the birth :( but better to be safe.
  • I'm so sorry. That is a tough situation for you and your husband. My SIL had this happen but they didn't figure it out until the actual delivery and by the time they did, there was so much happening, it was very traumatic and dangerous for her and the baby. I will spare you the details but her life and the baby's was in danger. I'm not sure how they didn't catch it before. I know it doesn't change the situation but maybe the silver lining is that you are aware and get prepared mentally and physically for a safe delivery? Good luck with everything.

I am in a similar boat with the low platelets. As of now the plan is vaginal birth with the chance of no epi which sucks because that's what I wanted but I am just praying I don't need a c section. My doc has had my count checked at every appointment since she first checked. They went from 97 to 104 and are now at 94. I am hoping they went back up last Friday. I am glad they are willing to take pictures for you though, that's pretty sweet of them. I do not think my hospital would do the same for us. Good luck!

    Edit: typing is tough

  • :-( that's just not fair. I had a csection and remember seeing her for a split second then I was completely out which felt like hours.
I feel for you, good luck for a healthy baby and momma.

So sorry to hear that - I also had low platelets due to HELLP and they warned me that there was a possibility that I would have to go under general but that it was the anesthesiologist's call.  My platelets were down to 79 when they last got the results and they just gave me a spinal so I was able to stay awake.  Hopefully your recovery is quick, and I'm sure your DH will be able to see your LO quickly, even though not being born.  Sorry you have to go through that, it's definitely not fun :(

  • Thanks for all the sweet thoughts ladies. The last time they checked they were 88. I just had more blood work done today, so I will find out tomorrow what they are now.

  • I just had a csection march 1st and after going through about 12 hrs of labor trying to deliver vaginally.  Unfortunately the epidural wasn't working to numb me completely (after 2 epidural attempts).  We went to the operating room thinking my husband would be allowed in and I ended up having to be put to sleep because I could still feel and my last minute my husband was told he couldn't come in to the room.  We were both super bummed, but they brought my husband in a soon as our son was born and he saw was with him from that minute on.  Also, I was woken up as soon as I was in the post op room.  It was not our ideal birth experience, but as soon as our son was swaddled he was handed straight to me.  It ended up being safest for our son and as I look back at the disappointment of having a csection, I know I did what was best to deliver my son safely.  I hope everything works out for you.
  • Do you have the option of trying for a VBAC?

  • I had to have general anesthesia for my c section. I was bummed but felt worse for my husband, because not being in the OR and waiting was nerve wracking. Both MH and my mom saw baby before I did. Not what I planned, but I tried to stay positive they got my baby out of me safely and I saw her sweet face as soon as I knew what was going on anyways.
  • Due to so many complications with my DD (which ended in an emergency section) my doctor has advised against a VBAC. My platelets are now at 70. Going back Monday for my last prenatal appointment before my scheduled section and my last blood work. Hoping for good news!
