I just came home from Whole Foods (being dairy, soy and gluten free makes it hard to shop anywhere but...) and noticed that the checker put someone else's bag in my cart - had deodorant, toothpaste and Burt's Bees lip balm in it... Debated going back but then DD got hungry so... Nope, not going...
Seriously, I know y'all think this is funny...but it's stealing. Go back in, call and offer to pay over the phone...just bc it was an accident, doesn't mean you shouldn't try and correct it.
That is the exception and not the rule. For instance, I "stole" some nipples from BBB the other day and just didn't have it in me to go back in there to pay for them after getting DS back in the car. I drove up to the door, leaned out the window and handed them to an employee that was loading something in the car. I apologized and drove away. It's just not that hard NOT to steal shit and like 1 in a million times is somebody going to have what happened to the pumpkin lady happen.

I dont remember really saying I thought it was funny. It was an honest mistake. And I apologize for not going back in but while lo was having a breakdown it wasnt a priority. And I did call and offer to pay next time Im in the store, but given targets track record with personal info I was not giving them a credit card number.
I'm experiencing guilt over a Kroger trip this week. I had a $5 formula check to redeem, but the cashier entered it as $50 (I had $40 in groceries total). She called the manager over to fix the problem. First the manager tried to give me $10 back in change. I explained to her that I never even paid, and was trying to use my card to complete the transaction. She printed a receipt and told me to have a nice day. Again, I told her I hadn't paid. She said, "No, the system says you have. You're good to go!" I asked the cashier if they could use my rewards card info to contact me when her register was off at the end of the day, because I knew it would be. They never called. I feel like shit, and probably should've called customer service. Maybe I still should.

You didn't "say" it but saying you would think of them when you use the product means you think it's not a big deal...and I disagree. This is such a message board thing, btw. IRL nobody I know would EVER knowingly steal something{as in figure it out later and at least try to make it right, I'm not saying you stole it on purpose}

Now that sounds like you went above and beyond. I do hope that the cashier didn't get in trouble but it was really the managers fault if they did. Hopefully the manager will own up to it.
"Jury duty is already a groan-worthy occasion, but imagine being called in to sit in judgment over the theft of a $2 pumpkin. That’s what is happening in the case of a 23-year-old woman in Albuquerque who accidentally left a pumpkin patch without paying for a small gourd. Back in October 2011, local KOAT News says the woman spent $75 on funnel cakes and other food at a pumpkin patch, went on hay rides and generally had fun. As she was leaving, she picked up a small pumpkin and was approached by police, explains her sister. “(She) said, ‘Oh my god, I’m so sorry. Can I pay for them?’ (They said), ‘Nope,’ and she was handcuffed immediately — end of story, no ifs or buts,” said the sister. When she was given an order to appear in court and complied, she figured the charges would be dropped. Not so much — she refused to plead guilty and do probation, and now the case is one for a jury. Tax payers’ dollars at work!"
I feel like there has to be more to this story. I have never heard of someone being prosecuted for accidentally shoplifting then going back to pay for it. No judge in his right mind would arraign a person for this unless there is more to it. Idk it just sound really off the wall.

I told the store about the hot dogs I stole accidentally and I tried to pay. They told methankyou for being honest and wouldn't take my money. I would never not attempt to make it right.

If that employee was not there, would you have walked in to take them back? No because you said you didn't have it in you to go back in. So you would have stolen them.
You sure are giving everyone a hard time!
Actually had an employee not been there, I would have pulled up to the curb and run them to the customer service desk, which was my plan before I saw the person. Nice try though.
I used the self checkout at the grocery the other day and accidentally missed an item....found it when I loaded everything and everyone into the car. I thought about just saying screw it and leaving, especially since no one noticed, but I felt too guilty. So I went back in to buy it and was rewarded for my honesty by being stuck behind the guy who had 30 items and no clue how to use the self check out.

So you would leave your child in the car unattended and go back inside to return it?
I really don't get why everyone thinks this is nbd. It isn't that hard to call the store and offer to make it right. It's only accidental until you realize it and do nothing. The only time this happened to me I returned the item to the store. Stealing is stealing and that does affect prices for others because on inventories those items must be written off as loss.

Yes, I actually would have left him unattended to walk the 3 feet inside the door to the customer service desk at my BBB. The cart racks are farther away in the parking lot, so he's been unattended for longer.
Sorry guys, you are going to get me to agree it's OK to steal in some cases. An accident happens...it's not fixing it that makes you a crappy person.
I accidentally took a kid's jersey last year...it was under the diaper bag and I was a frazzled FTM who hadn't learned to ALWAYS CHECK THERE. It was freezing cold, DD was freaking out, so we went home. I called to explain what had happened and asked if I could pay for it next time I came in. At first the manager acted like I was crazy for being honest, but she agreed.
And of course the next time I was there I forgot. I called again and they told me not to worry about it, but I was still embarrassed.

Don't leave baby unattended in the car. Besides, that us just as illegal as stealing anything.
I will most certainly put my child in the car and return the cart. Especially when it's cold.

Leaving the baby in a car to go back into the store and out of sight if the car is totally NOT the same as loading the baby up and keeping an eye on your car as you return a cart.
I've also recently used an ATM that was literally 5 ft away from my car while the kids were inside and I watched it the whole time. I would've rather gone to a drive thru but was the only one around that didn't have a surcharge. FLAAAAME ME
