Sex After C-Section?

I found a thread about sex after a vaginal birth, but I'm curious about sex after a C/S.  Is there the same restriction for 6 weeks of pelvic rest?  Or are there different guide lines.  How long did you wait after your C/S to have sex?  Was it painful at first or OK?  If I somehow missed a previous thread about this, can someone link me there please.  If not, STM+ your wisdom would be greatly appreciated. :)

  • Yeah, no sex until you're cleared at your 6 week check up. I can't really remember if sex was painful\bad after... we were probably pretty careful and took our time. It doesn't stick out in my mind as a bad experience. I know we didn't wait the full 6 weeks... I felt pretty much normal after 4 weeks. Even took a 10 hour road trip when Shorty was 5 weeks old.

  • Ditto all the 6 week comments. It was a little uncomfortable the first time, not sure if that was because it had been a while though. I had been on pelvic and then bed rest from about later second tri, so it had been a while.

  • I was cleared at 4 weeks for sex. It was uncomfortable, but it wasn't the worst thing in the world. All the hormones really screw it up for a while. It was probably a few months before it was back to what it had been pre-baby.

  • Yes. I had a 6 week restriction, and the first time was very uncomfortable. But, it got better after a few times.

  • The 6 weeks is after birth in general. Your uterus is very susceptible to an infection for the first few weeks. It's basically a giant open wound from where the baby detaches for birth. I've heard of some doing it much sooner than 6 weeks but they are taking a major risk.
    This.  I wasn't cleared until 6 weeks.

  • I was cleared at 6w and we waited 2-3w after that to actually do it. When you only sleep in 30min stretches sex is the last thing in your mind! It was uncomfortable for a few months.

  • I think we made it about 5 weeks (what can I say? we couldn't help ourselves) .. Took it slow at first. Ditto on the hormones messing with dryness, but there are products out there for that ;-)

Also, if you BF, that will dry you out even more, just as an FYI. Oh, and DH wasn't allowed much around "the girls" b/c of BFing and tenderness issues.

  • After my CS I was cleared for sex at 10 or 12 (cant remember) weeks because I was still bleeding a lot at my first check up.

  • We made it 5 weeks, and even then it was super uncomfortable. Totally cleared at 6 weeks, though I'd started my period by then (yup, I'm one of the lucky ones), so it wasn't really happening. Mostly I was too tired for sex for a while, and baby was right by us till 8 weeks. But it's definitely sore for a while.
  • I guess im the oddball here.we waitied about 3 weeks after c/s to have sex.OBsaid it was fine as long as all bleeding had stopped and we were up for it.it was uncomfortable at first but got a lot better.its weird because while pregnant the whole time i had zero want, but after baby was a whole different story.
  • I waited probably 7-8 weeks, and it was pretty painful. Sex was actually painful to some degree for about 6 months after, even with lube. I attribute it to breastfeeding.
  • I was cleared at 6 weeks after my c/s and we had some false starts after that. It was just really uncomfortable because of dryness and whatever hormones I had going totally drained my sex drive. I think we finally successfully banged out when I gave up BFing, about 2months PP.

  • I was cleared after 6 weeks but I didn't have sex until 9 weeks after birth. Honestly I enjoyed it. We took it really slow, used a lot of lube and started with a small vibrator.

Hah, the wording of this is perfect. I totally see this being me PP - "Let's do it!....Never mind....."

  • Thanks for all the input ladies. We learned about how long after vaginal birth in our birth class you are cleared for sex but not about after C/S. DH and I were talking about it the other day, so I was curious since that is most likely what will happen for me.

  • Orgasm from external stimulation is safe earlier; foreign objects in the vagina are unsafe till the bleeding is almost completely gone. We fooled around at 3 weeks but waited just over 5 weeks for intercourse. It felt pretty normal for me. NBD.

It depends on how much you dilated also. If you were fully dilated and labored before having a cesarean then they will make you wait a few weeks until you are back to normal. Each delivery is different, you just have to ask your doctor who knows your situation. With my daughter I had a C-section and was told to wait 6 weeks.

Ummm no. I had zero dilation before my c/s and was still to wait 6 weeks. Your cervix has nothing to do with the gaping hole in your uterine wall.
