Sleep Sack / Blanket Question...

Does anyone know when we should start the transition from sleep sacks to blankets? I'm assuming 1 year but not positive. Any BTDT moms or anyone that is also going to be transitioning that can give me some insight?

Re: Sleep Sack / Blanket Question...

  • I'm pretty sure they recommend no blankets until a year. So I'm sure you can start transitioning around then. I can't remember what we did with my  DS.

We were just having this conversation this weekend. We just transitioned out of the sleepsuit so we havent been using sleep sacks. But its cold and lately he has been cuddling up with his stuffed animals and throw blankets etc. so we looked at blankets this weekend and I think we're going to get him one. Sids is still a risk but I think E can handle a blanket. We put a taggie lovie in there now and a stuffed beanie baby and they havent caused any issue.
What kind of blankets are you looking into? I don't want to get anything to big but I want them to keep her warm and comfortable. I'm looking into the aden and anais dream blankets, not possitive though.

I'm so afraid of anything in the crib that Emmett will probably be in sleep sacks until he goes to college :-/
I was like that too and still am!! I just know it is going to happen at some point. So far she has 3 things in her crib ; her puppy , teddy , and a lovey. They are all small and  are mainly just to entertain her when she wakes up.

  • My 2.5 year old still sleeps in a sleep sack. He loves it and I ask him if he wants a blanket and he tells me no, he wants his sleep sack. He and DS2 always move around so much in their sleep I don't think they would keep a blanket on them.

  • J uses a blanket too. You guys really need to buy a blanket? Didn't you get a shit ton when LO was born?!?! J has a surplus!!!
  • I would use a blanket but she kicks and moves so much it falls off. Then she wakes up cold. I have her still in a sleep sack and will continue for a while. I have also heard when they wear a sleep sack they have a much harder time trying to climb out of their cribs.

  • We use a sleep sack. Honestly DH will most likely veto a blanket till she's in a real bed since he's nervous about sids. Poor girl can't even get a toy or lovey to play with!

My child is like a ping pong ball in his crib, just bounces off the sides all night long in his sleep. He wears fleece pj's on cold nights and sleeps with his beloved burp cloth. We put a crocheted blanket on him for naps when we are going to be up the whole time he's napping. I can't picture still using a sleep sack when he's so mobile. For those that do, is your LO not standing/walking yet?

  • Lo is pretty mobile and the sleep sack doesn't bother her. She rolls all over the crib and some mornings is standing in the crib.

  • I've been using a blanket that my mom crocheted.  It has holes so there is no suffocation risk, but it is thick yarn so it's warm.  We have also used some receiving blankets.

  • When we were in the hospital, I covered Em with a blanket, since he couldn't wear his pjs. He hated it. He would wake up crying if one was on him. My kid is weird...

We got about 12 crocheted blankets at my shower and I totally forgot about them!! There were so many we had to pack them away till she could use them. Maybe I don't have to buy one after all. Good call!

  • I still put her in a sleep sack. She moves too much, and she likes to completely cover her face with blankets. I was sick on Saturday and DH put her to bed without the sleepsack and used a blanket. He kept having to get up and re-cover her.

She sleeps with a lovey and her seahorse, those don't make me nervous.

C has been sleeping with a blanket since Nov and a pillow since Jan. He does just fine. I do check on him often though and we use a video monitor.

DS is still in a sleep sac.  This kid moves way too much for a blanket to even function as a blanket lol

  • For me it depends on the child. My DD started using a crocheted blanket at 5 months and she is very attached to it. DS uses one during nap time but I haven't felt comfortable letting him have it at night.
