Augustus vs Alexander

We both love Alexander and Augustus though he prefers Alexander while I prefer Augustus. I decided we needed to expand our options a bit so we stopped looking at these two names and turned to name lists. We've been discussing other names and keeping our very own lists. We were comparing and he noticed that Alexander had an x next to it on my list with the reason "too popular". He was not happy about it! It isn't marked off really...just got points against it. He then crossed Augustus off his list. I don't want to throw out the only two names that we both love just because we can't agree which we love most. Which do you prefer? And what would you do in this situation?

Re: Augustus vs Alexander

  • I prefer Alexander. In the case of Alexander, the popularity wouldn't bother me because it's so classic with so much history.

  • I'm not super picky on popularity but it's in the top 10! That's just pushing it a little bit for me.

  • I prefer Augustus, but I think the most important thing is to find something you both like.

My husband and I had a white board in our living room where we could each write any names we liked, but couldn't talk about them or comment on them (and therefore couldn't diss each other's choices). It gave us space to have judgment-free exposure to each other's ideas. We wound up going with a name that I originally loved and he originally vetoed--it grew on him.

    Not a fan of Augustus.

    Keep looking.

I guess I would pick Alexander, unless you dropped the "us" off at the end of Augustus and just made it August. I love August!
  • I think that if you love a name, popularity shouldn't matter. I have a super uncommon name and always said that I'd never give my children popular names. Well, it just so happens that the name we loved for DS1 is top 50 and both of the names we loved for DS2 (first and middle) are top 10. We used them anyway. The popularity brothers me a bit, but their names are perfect, and I'm glad that we chose them.

  • I love them both!!! And they were both on our list! Alexander ended up crossed off due to popularity, and Augustus got crossed off because it was too matchy with our son's name! Good luck deciding!

  • I have a friend with a son named Augustus and I really like it. He goes by Auggie (pronounce Awg-ee) and I think its adorable! His cousins call him gustus to which is cute :) They're both great names, and Alexander isn't really all that common. There isn't one in my son's class of 33 if that helps! :)
  • I much prefer Alexander to Augustus. What about August instead of Augustus? Or using a different form of Alexander or agree to nn him Zander or go by the full Alexander instead of going by Alex like everyone else?
  • I like Gus - little boys with old man names are awesome. But that being said, I apparently consider it to be an old man name lol. So if that bugs you, maybe steer clear.
Don't worry too much about popularity. Many times those are regionally/demographically true anyway and who knows where your little one will end up! My name is Sara, there was ALWAYS another Sara in my class, in my crew, at work - who cares! I like my name and every time I meet someone else with my name, it's an immediate bond. Strange but true :)
  • August and Augustus are both rising in popularity. While Augustus will never be as popular as Alexander it is quickly becoming a hip trend (I've met three babies/toddlers since DD was born with the name Alexander and 3 with variations of August) I love both names. It's a coin toss IMO

  • I would just set them aside for now and keep looking. Both are great names but you both might surprise yourselves!
