Older twins, bed sharing...need advice.

Hey guys, mostly a lurker, but I need some advice!

The twins (they will be two on Tuesday) have separate toddler beds, and they do very well when it comes to going to bed and nap time.  They have been in their toddler beds since about 18 months.  I hardly ever have problems getting them to go to sleep.  But 90% of the time they end up in bed together.  This doesn't bother me, but I hate for them to be so squished on top of each other.  We have been considering getting them a full size bed and just putting bed rails up.  This way the could sleep together, and still have room to wiggle.  They literally end up either on top of each other, squished up against the wall or laying sideways on the bed with their legs hanging off.

I'm curious though, is this just a phase, and will they eventually want separate beds again before they outgrow their toddler beds, or does this last for awhile.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I know I can't be the only one that has gone or is going through this.

Here is a sweet picture of them sleeping together =)

Re: Older twins, bed sharing...need advice.

  • I am an identical twin. Even with big beds, we still slept together. As we got older we 'had' our own rooms but opted to keep our bunk bed together and share a room and have a play room. Don't fight it, it is a beautiful thing.
  • I had to split my boys up because they were waking each other, which sort of made me sad... I think it's a very natural thing for humans to want to sleep together. If it were me I would make one bed out of the toddler beds, or join two twin beds together - granted you or one of you Is moderately handy. This way they have one bed but aren't smooshed and when (not if, when) they change their minds you have two beds that can be split apart.

  • I could give my boys all the room in the world, and they would still sleep on top of each other. I'm in the 'let them be' camp! Such a sweet photo.

  • We have two twin beds right next to each other on the floor (no frame) so it's like one big bed.  My twins start out in their own beds at the beginning of the night.  Some nights they'll migrate towards each other, other nights they stay in their own bed.  We went this route so they'll still have their own beds when they decide they want to be separated.
  • So sweet!  I hope my girls go this way.

I slept with my sister until I was 11 and we were perfectly happy.  If they like it, there is no reason not to do one big bed.
