Tip toe walking

Dd is a tip toe walker. She has been walking since 12 months and I've just noticed the tip toe walk in the last month or two. She does and can walk flat footed with no problems. I'd say she walks on her tip toes half of the time lately and others started pointing it out. She doesn't show any symptoms of muscle or nerve issues and she doesn't show any signs of autism. She is just a normal toddler in every other way. I've read some scary things on it and some things that say it's no big deal she will grow out of it. Doesn't anyone else have a tip teo walker or have any knowledge on the topic? I ofcourse plan on bringing it up at her 18 month apt at the end of the month.

Audrey does this sometimes, but I always figured since a lot of times she walks and runs totally normal that she is just playing around or experimenting with new things. If your dd Is able to walk normally it's probably nothing but it never hurts to bring it up to your doc!

  • My older son does/did that and it raised some red flags for his speech therapist and our doctor. Apparently it can be a sign of a sensory disorder? Either way, while he is sensitive to textures, everything else appears 'normal'.
He just likes to walk on his tip toes.

  • DS did it all the time and so does Sawyer. No problems for DS and I'd assume the same for Sawyer. I always stand on my tip toes when I brush my teeth so I just assumed they inherited my weirdness.

  • Lexie does a weird walk often. Last night I think I figured it out- she's trying to skip. Kids are goofy! She thought it was a hoot when I was mocking her so it appears that she was purposely trying to do it.

I'd say something if you are concerned but I think they are exploring.

  • My son does this too sometimes. He always does a goofy walk where he bends his knees and kinda bounces. I thought it was just him ex ploring different ways to walk. I don't think it is always a sign that something is wrong.
I'm going to bring it up with my dr at his 18m appt in a couple of weeks now that you mention it, but I'm sure it's just them exploring!

  • My four year old nephew does this. Always has. MIL is a physical therapist and says it's bad and has started telling him to stop when she notices. Nephew does seems to have something wrong, but since we don't talk about those things I'm not sure what the problem is. MIL says asbergers. Anyways. The only "symptom" he had at this point was practically no speech. He mumbled and made noises, but not even close to any words. I don't think BIL and SIL are doing anything about this, though.

  • Ds1 does this. He's a totally normal 3 year old. Pediatrician said he didn't have autism or anything on the scale but had us do a PT eval when he had his 2 year old visit but they said it was fine too and he'd grow out of it. He was given a few "exercises" to play to help stretch the Achilles' tendon like "bear walking", climbing, etc. he still walks occasionally regular or on his toes. He does seem a bit more clumsy sometimes because he'll trip, but he can run jump and be crazy like a normal toddler. Ds2 (sept baby) while he walks more flat footed I've started seeing some tiptoeing too but he's very verbal and social so we'll just make sure to do the exercise/play and he 'll probably be fine too.

  • Thanks ladies it's nice to hear that we are not the only ones. As far as her speech goes she says probably about 10 words on her and and will repeat about 30 words if we say them first. She's not above average in speech but seems normal. She understands things very very well and although she's attached to my hip she's pretty social when she warms up so I'm leaning towards it just being a habit . Will bring up at apt if I'm there (right around my due date )
  • On her own ** edit
  • So, DS walks on his tiptoes at times. I just thought it was a fun/exploring kind of thing like others said and didn't know it was associated with autism. Can someone fill me in a little so I'm not tempted to google?...

Nephew literally had no words, and walked/walks on tip toes 100% of the time. I agree with the others, it's probably new and fun to do. It's good that you're thinking about it, even if it's nothing. I'm sure everything will check out fine :)
