February 2013 Moms

My name is Dubs....

and I'm about to go on Prozac for PPD.

Ugh. This is tough. Beyond the wine, and the gifs, and the hilarity I try to ensue, there's a strung out mama. And everyone in my house is suffering for it. So I confess this to my fellow February loves because I have never taken prozac, and I'm looking for insights from anyone that has. I've done lexapro and celexa for anxiety in the past. But this one is a little different, I think. Give it to me straight, ladies.

  • I think it's so courageous and strong to take charge of your life like that. I don't have any experience with meds but I do in friendship. I think it goes without saying that I am always here for you!

  • ::hugs:: I struggled with PPD too for so long. I finally went on Zoloft last month. At 50 mg I wasn't feeling a difference but now at 100 mg I feel better. I was getting anxiety attacks and my temper was out of control. I screamed and cursed at DS several times, especially in the middle of the night.

I really hope you feel better and that the meds work out. Kudos to you for trying to help yourself, you're doing great mama!!

  • Agree that prozac does not do much for anxiety. I took it at some point in high school, but I don't remember much about it (or that time in my life? lol). Just DO NOT miss doses, and DO NOT come off of it cold turkey when that time comes. That goes for pretty much any antidepressant, though.

  • I have no help with the meds?, but I hope you start feeling better soon!

  • You have gotten a great start by seeking help. And there is lots of strength in being open about your mental health, especially when it has been a stigma for so many years. Having people like you be open about their PPD can help other mothers open up too. Proud of you, mama!

  • I've taken Zoloft and Lexapro, but no Prozac. Good luck, mama. You know you can always talk to me about all things PPD related.

Prozac definitely took the edge off, for me, after my first was born. It wasn't a good match for me in the long run - made me feel like a zombie, with very little interest in anything about six months or so into taking it (I wasn't even a little bit depressed, it just tanked my overall motivation instead of just the stress). It definitely made things easier to deal with though, and was the start to a very long journey of getting myself put together.

I am so sorry you are dealing with PPD, but I love that you are recognizing it and advocating for yourself <3
