TTC after 35

First medicated cycle

I got a call from my RE today - my progesterone test showed I did not ovulate.  I'm guessing he suspects PCOS because he called in Metformin and Clomid.  We're scheduling an ultrasound for cycle day 5 and I have my instructions for the medications.  I'm about 7-8 days away from cycle day 1, but he said to go ahead and start the Metformin, so I'm getting that tomorrow morning.

I'm so nervous about this.  So help me calm my nerves by telling me about your first medicated cycle.  (if you have had one)  I know everyone is different, but I would love to hear some stories.  Bonus points if you have been on the combo I'm going to be taking.

Re: First medicated cycle

  • Metformin is used for insulin resistance.  I took the extended release pills and started on a low dose then moved up gradually.  It can cause major stomach/bathroom issues so be aware of that!  I found with the extended release and taking it right after dinner my symptoms went away after a couple of days.  Some people have a really tough time on it though.

Clomid is easy...just pills.  It did make me very moody/weepy though.

    good luck!

  • First of all, best wishes on your medication. I hope it goes well for you! Why do they prescribe Metformin? How do insulin issues relate to fertility and/or PCOS? I'm so curious because I sell a weight loss product that helps regulate blood sugars and lots of customers using it are on Metformin or have PCOS and see noticeable improvement but I have never put the two together! I love learning new info. Honestly just trying to educate myself, hope you don't mind all the questions.
  • I just graduated from the fertility clinic last week. I was diagnosed with diminished ovarian reserve and because of my age I requested an assertive approach to my doctor. We skipped clomid all together and went directly to letrazole and menopur with a trigger and an IUI. It didn't work :( the next month was Christmas so we were out of town and missed that cycle. The next cycle we tried lupron menopur trigger progesterone suppositories and requested a double IUI and that worked! Everyone is different but if you don't have much time I'd suggest you push on your doctors to try different treatments versus trying the same one again and again. Good luck!!!
  • I absolutely plan to push him to be aggressive rather than trying the same thing over and over.  AF started yesterday, so we have scheduled a cycle day 5 ultrasound for Friday.  Looking forward to seeing what that will find.  He hasn't said anything about PCOS, but I know that's what this medication combo is usually used for, so I'm kind of expecting to hear this diagnosis at my appointment on Friday.

Luckily, the Metformin hasn't given me any bad side effects yet.  I'm just really, really thirsty!  Drinking all the water I need isn't going to be a problem while I'm on this medicine!  ;)

  • MY RE was aggressive due to my age.

We did one trial of IUI immediately and when I produced WAY too many follicles, he canceled it and appealed to my insurance company to tranfer to IVF.

I just finished for my first IVF and I am in the 2WW stage

  • Just wanted to let you guys know (and didn't want to start another thread because I don't really want to scream it all over this board) but the first medicated cycle produced a bfp.  10 months of trying and we finally have a line.  I have an appointment in two weeks.  :)

Thank you for all your information and support.
