Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Too much nap time?

About a month ago, DS was sleeping 7:30pm - 7 at night but was napping TERRIBLY.  Maybe two 1/2 hour naps.  I have been working hard on getting nap time to go better and now it is.  DS will sleep 1 and 1/2 hours in the am and have two 1 hour naps in the afternoon.  I was trying to follow the awake for 2 hours then down for a nap routine.  However, now his nighttime sleeping is bad.  He wakes several times a night and then wants to be up for the day at 5 or 6 am.
I know sleep begets sleep, but is it possible that I am letting him nap for too long and that is affecting his nighttime sleep? (I give him medicine for teething, so I don't think that is the reason he is up.  Also, I offer him a bottle and he will kind of take a little nibble and then thats it, so he isn't hungry either.)
Anyone else experiencing this?

You could still be dealing with the 4MW.  It sounds like some babies get it over with over the course of a week but others struggle for a month or two with their night time sleep.  If that's all it is, I think you're just going to have to wait it out.  Hoping it gets better for you!!
This. And you're right sleep begets sleep. If your LO is napping during the day for a long time then it's because your LO needs the sleep! Once they are a bit older you can kind of try and control that nap so that it doesn't go too late into the day and mess up their nighttime sleep...but right now- let her sleep!

    edit- words are hard.
  • FWIW, mine won't sleep 12 hours at night. Most he will do is 10, but its usually closer to 9. And he normally takes 3-4 hours of naps during the day spread out in 3-4 naps ranging anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours.

Every baby is different, and I don't know who decided that 15 hours of sleep is what they need, but just like adults some babies are fine on less sleep. So you may be right, he may be napping too much during the day, or you may now be putting him to bed too early.

I'm a fan of letting LO drive the sleep train, and I just know that every few hours he needs a nap and it doesn't matter if its 45 minutes or 2 hours. And I keep a consistent bedtime.
