when did your children start identifying body parts or facial features. how do you encourage it other than just saying wheres your nose? or there's your nose. im running out of ideas.
She's known her body parts for several months. She loves books, so that's how she's learned most of them. I point to the part when we are reading about it.
His third word was belly button, lol. That was right around 12 months. Now at 16 months, he identifies eyes, ears, hair, head, nose, mouth, teeth, tongue, hand, fingers, feet, toes, belly, and tush!
I think the karen katz book Toes Ears & Nose was very helpful actually!
Reading the book "I Love you Through and Through" every night has helped LO recognize body parts. Top and bottom, nose, ears, hair, fingers, toes, inside/outside. Also goes over emotions: happy, sad, mad, silly.
The "Where's your belly button" flap book series helped around here. I'm not sure DD knows everything yet, though. She's had eyes and nose down for a long time. She knows belly button, elbow, knee, toes, and feet. But I'm not sure she knows arms/legs...those aren't in the books, lol.
These books are great. Also, bath time is a good time to work on it. We take turn washing knees and toes and whatnot. My kids have their own washcloth for their washing and then I have one. I wouldn't stress about it too much. They learn them.
Both my kids learned body parts somewhere around 12-14 months (DD could say them, DS could point to them) from reading books, singing songs, talking during bath, teeth brushing, dressing, and just playing and interacting.

I'm going to go to Barnes & noble this weekend and try and find this! Ds loves books but don't have any books like that:)
Kids learn most from us, and interacting with us. Just keep pointing out the body parts as often as you can. They pick up on it pretty quickly. DS busted out with "eyebrow" the other day and I have no idea where he learned that!
This. We point out body parts all the time. During baths, dressing, songs, and just general play. Once DS starting saying the words and pointing to the body parts, there has been no stopping him! ;-)
DS is 16m now and I think he started learning them around 13m? At first he only identified them on ME - my nose, my ear etc. It took a month or 2 before he could find them on himself! Well, using the mirror helped. I just point them out to him every day.

Every bath time, we describe each body part we're washing (time to wash your nose...time to wash your knees....penis...etc). Easy way to fit it into the day and he thinks it's fun. He learned really fast once we started doing this.
DS learned nose pretty early on (probably from "I Love You Through and Through") but when I asked him where his nose was he'd touch mine, without fail. Finally one day while brushing his teeth in the bathroom I tapped on the mirror so he'd look, took his hand to his nose, and said, "There's your nose!" He's been touching his nose ever since.
DS knows most of his features by us constantly saying stuff like "lets brush your teeth" while pointing to his/our teeth, or lets wash your hands, etc. You could find pictures or stickers or even names of body parts (with tape on the back) and have LO stick them on yours, theirs or a stuffed animals body parts. That's always fun We also have several books that talk about body parts and while reading them, I touch his parts when the book mentions them.
