When to move up a size in diapers?

You'd think I'd know the answer to this question, having done this before, but I don't. DS is 13 pounds. His Pampers size one are from 8-14 pounds and size two are from 12-18 pounds. I have cases and cases of 2's leftover from DD. I don't know if I should move him or not. He does not have blow outs. I just put a 2 on him and I can make the tabs touch. Too big, right? I should buy another case of ones for now, right?

Re: When to move up a size in diapers?

  • You would think I would know the answer to this as well, but I don't haha!  I would think if they aren't leaking he is ok in that size.  I just moved Viv into size 1s because I just finished all her newborn diapers.  I probably should have switched her a week ago since she started leaking in newborns if I did not change her in a short amount of time, but I wanted to use them all up,

  • We move up when they hit the top weight limit. Saves us from leaks and blow outs.

  • I moved up from NB to 1's when I didn't like how much they made marks on her legs. I never had a blowout until she stopped pooping everyday so that hasn't been a good gauge for me. She is still very much within the size range for 1's, it's just that sometimes it's 3 days between poops and I'm not even sure a pull-up would hold all that mess!

If you're not having blowouts and the 1's still fit okay, I'd prbly buy a smaller pack of 1's as well.

  • The weight thing hasn't been accurate for us so far. I moved DD up when she started leaking/blowing out in the newborns. We're just about ready to head up to 2's, but I'm trying to use up the rest of the size 1's.

  • Ugh. I have literally 1,000+ size 2's. Someone tell me that it sounds like a lot of diapers, but I won't end up with excess 2s before we have to go to 3s. It was NBD to buy extra with DD because I knew I could save them for the next. But there is no next baby here so I am trying to use them all up. I'll pick up some 1s. Thanks everyone!

  • You didn't say THOUSANDS before! If that were the case and I was worried I wouldn't even get through all my 2's, I would definitely just go ahead and do it now!

  • Honestly I'd just use the 2s. If you find it's a problem, then maybe buy more 1s. But since your LO is past the minimum weight for 2s, I'd try it out.

  • I would use the 2's. Tabs touching wouldn't bother me, but if you do that and there are still gaps around the legs then I would worry.
I would give the 2's a go and if you start getting leaks or blow outs then consider getting some 1's.

I wait for leaks too. DD was in 2s for a long time so I wouldn't worry about using up all of your 2s. I would buy more 1s

  • We moved to 2's last week. We only use disposables overnight and I didn't feel like going to the site when I realized we were out of 1's. DS was 12.5 pounds. I fold down the front and the tabs overlap, but no leaks or blowouts so far.

  • I'd say try a 2 and see how it works!  And do you have an entire room devoted to diapers?!  That's a lot!

Lol, no, they are in his closet and since we don't hang any newborn clothes (we put them in a dresser), the closet is just more storage room for now.

I don't agree on weight thing either cause DS legs are like the Michelin mans. When NB got to tight on his legs I switched to size 1. I think it depends how they fit. But 2 might be too big if the tabs touch
    Edit. Hit post before done

I've been wondering this myself. DD is still in the weight limit for newborns but she is at the high end of it now. But I tried a size 1 on her today and it seems huge- the tabs overlap. She is pretty long but she is skinny. I haven't had a big blowout or leak with the newborns yet but they are getting short on her.

But in your case since you have a ton lying around, I would just use them up!

  • I didn't know that the tabs weren't supposed to touch. DS is super close to the weight limit on NB but the tabs touch. They've gotten to be tight on his legs/leave too many marks so I just switched him to 1's last night. The tabs overlap, but he hasn't leaked yet.

I would start using the 2s.

  • If you have that many, I would just use the 2s!  No reason to buy 1s then.

  • I don't agree

Sure it does, I guess I didn't explain myself well. What I meant is that I don't agree with what they have written about pounds on the packaging on the diaper boxes. I was going off of thelittlepears post I should of added it.
  • LO is only 11 pounds but I put him into 2s bc I'm out of 1s and he gets a lot of wrinkles from 1s being too tight. We haven't had any blowouts, thankfully. 2s fit him fine and there is no issue here. I would just go with 2s from now on and utilize them unless you saw a problem.
  • DD is 12.5 pounds and has been in 2s for weeks. Obviously all babies are shapes and sized differently but if the 2s aren't falling off I'd just use those.
