Which Pump to Keep at Work?

Hi all - I have a Medela Freestyle from DS1 that I'm planning to keep at home when DS2 arrives. I just found out that my insurance 100% covers a pump this time, so I'm planning to get a second pump to keep at work, which will save me a lot of hassle on my long NYC subway/train commute. These are the options I've narrowed it down to. Please help me decide! I never loved the suction on my Freestyle, and I think it caused supply issues when I went back to work, so I'm hoping whichever pump I get will do a better job. If you have any comments about these, please share below. Thank you!!

  • Another point is the hygeia can work with some medela accessories, which you already have. I use the bottles and flanges from my Pisa exclusively with my insurance hygeia so I didn't have to purchase anything extra.

  • Thanks for the input!  I was definitely leaning towards the Hygeia.  @SweetC80 - I will not be EPing, unless the baby starts rejecting nursing, which did happen with DS1 eventually.  Once I go back to work, I only plan to pump at home to stock up supply and in cases where I'm away from the baby.  I think I will test out which pump works better for me, and once I'm back at work, I'll leave the better of the two there.
  • Yep, keep the "better one" at work, for sure, whichever that may be.

Wouldn't be a bad idea to keep a manual there, too, as backup.

  • I've used the Lasinoh Double Affinity with my last baby at home.  It was ok overall, but it made a lot of noise in my opinion.
  • I had the Hygeia Enjoye and its suction is powerful, but you can control it with the gauge. When my office bought hospital grad Medela Symphonies, I found the suction was about the same as my Enjoye - saved me maybe 2 minutes per pumping session so was a little more efficient but Hygeia was still great.

Good to hear this, since I just placed the order for it through my insurance!  I can't believe that three years ago, when I had DS1, my insurance company wouldn't pay for any part of a pump because it was considered "over the counter".  This time around I got a $300+ pump for FREE (different insurance company, but it's because of the new healthcare laws anyway).  Awesome!

    Edited for typos.

  • @theresat858, sorry to hear that! One morning, I assembled the thing incorrectly and thought the pump had stopped working, but I called, left a message, and they called me back within an hour, listened to the pump over the phone, and had me piece by piece re-assemble the thing and were really helpful. I'm not sure what they would have done if it was completely broken but I did find the customer service was helpful and quick to respond.

  • @theresat858 - Thanks for the warning!  I feel like the entire breast pump industry is frought with "lemons" - it's impossible to find one on the market that doesn't have about 10-20% of reviews saying they didn't work.  Luckily, I will also still have my Medela Freestyle from DS1, so if one pump goes caput, hopefully the other will work!  I just figured I would take advantage of a free one through my insurance.  :-)
