Blocked tube from previous C section?

Hi Ladies,

*Child Mentioned*

I have a 2 year old, whom we conceived naturally, but had an emergency C section for delivery.
We started TTC #2 a year ago. Given my age, I visited a RE after 6 months. I inquired about HSG at that time, but the RE said since I conceived my first one naturally, it wasn't necessary, unless I really want it. So I left it at that. 6 more months and 2 negative IUI's later, I decided to change RE because my old RE doesn't do IVF, which we are considering as the next step.
The new RE took a look at my history chart and said immediately, "you should get a fallopian tube test. they could be blocked by scars from c section."

I read about it before but always thought the probability is really small. Did anyone here get blocked tube from previous c-section? Is it more common than I originally thought? I'm kicking myself now for not insisting on it earlier, and wasting all this time and money on IUI without get them checked first!!

Thank you.

Re: Blocked tube from previous C section?

  • Well, you know the saying "Don't borrow trouble" that's for times like this. It does happen, but try not to think of the worst case scenario, just have the test done, and FX everything will be fine. FWIW I had a c-section, and I had to ask for the HSG as part of my initial testing (with the OB) and her response was pretty much the same as your original RE, that it's very uncommon but she did it because I wanted it.

The good thing is, pending there are no issues, there's a higher chance of pregnancy during the 2 cycles immediately following the HSG, so if you were going to try another IUI, that would be the perfect time to plan it!

Good luck, and welcome to the board.

P.S you don't have to worry about a child warning on this board, we all have kids here :)

Thanks for the reply Mrs Castilo! It's great to hear that there will be better chance of IUI after HSG, as I do plan to do IUI #3 right after :) I know I was stressing myself out a little bit. It's so frustrating with unexplained infertility, just playing guessing games here!

I know exactly what you mean! I'm always saying having an unexplained DX is so much worse than having an actual issue that can be directly addressed. It's like shooting darts in the dark. Try to stay positive, all we can do is hope for the best!

  • I didn't even know that could be an issue! Sheesh, now I've got something else to talk to my Dr about at my apt next week. Hope yours goes well and all is clear and that the following IUI results in a bfp.

  • I've been worried about the same thing since I also had an emergency c section. For now I'm letting things be, but I see an HSG in my future. I have extreme discomfort when ovulating since my csection. My first and only HSG was horrific, however I got bfps the two months following, the 2nd one resulting in my son :) I say if you have coverage for it, get it done. It can only help in the long run.

  • Sidey, I've also been getting cramps during ovulation since my c section. I don't remember getting these cramps prior to my child. I didnt even think that they might be related to the c section....Anyway made appointment for next week. A bit scared since I've never done it before.

  • When I had my ectopic the RE gave me a list of reasons one might be susceptible to ectopics and one of them was major abdominal surgery and it blocking your tubes. I'd ask for the test even if they don't find it necessary. You're the one who will be spending money on meds and treatments and you'll want to know you have the best odds.
