Natural Birth

11 days over due, how to stay medication free?

FTM and the little man doesn't want to budge. We have used sage oils, acupuncture, pressure points, and swept the membrane. Baby is already 8 pounds so they don't want him in longer the this saturday, 42nd week. My ideal birth ( I know it won't happen) it with out meds but it looks like we will need to induce with pit. My question is, have any of you been induced with pit. and been able to still avoid an epidural?

Re: 11 days over due, how to stay medication free?

  • I know it seems like an induction is inevitable, but you still have plenty of time, truly!   A lot can change between now and then, so don't lose hope!

There are girls on here who were able to go pain-med free with an induction, so it is possible.  I didn't have to be induced, but my MW said part of what makes it hard is the lack of mobility.  She said just because you are being induced doesn't mean you have to stay in bed.  She encourages patients to get creative, sit on the birthing ball next to the bed, pull the rocking chair up close to the bed.  I would encourage you to request the lowest dose of pit and ask that it be shut off once you are in a good contraction pattern.

    Other things you might try:
    Sex
    Nipple Stimulation with a pump
    Chiro Adjustment
    Sweeping Membranes again
    Walking
  • Loading the player...
  • Also try acupuncture again!
  • Thanks!! I didnt think if using a pump...good idea!
  • I was induced with Pitocin and went med free. I don't know how pit contractions compare to natural ones, but it was terrible. That being said, I still managed. I used the tub, birthing ball, counter pressure, etc. Just keep reminding yourself that you can do it. It's also helpful to have in your plan that YOU will ask for pain meds if you need them rather than them being offered to you. Good luck!

I was induced with acupuncture and acupressure. It hurt after the first day but my acupuncturist just said "come back every day until the baby comes" I also walked, bounced on a birthing ball and had my membranes swept twice. Baby came at the 11th hour the day before 42+1

  • Where I live they start inductions with a foley catheter first.  It inflates your cervix to about 3cm, then falls out.  Sometimes that's enough to kick start labour and no further action is needed.  Is that an option where you are?

If the foley doesn't work then they start talking about pitocin here.

  •  I would also recommend sucking on lolly pops. There is a pressure point in the roof of your mouth that can stimulate labor.
  • Will they start right out with pitocin, or use a cervical ripener first?  I was induced at 41 weeks, and they started me on cervadil first.  Despite coming in at just 1 cm dilated and 30% effaced, the cervadil got contractions started for me and ended up being all I needed.  I got a little pitocin during the pushing stage but that was it.  And it wasn't bad at all!

  • You can still say no. Agree to an NST, if they insist and buy yourself more time by showing them that baby is doing just fine. There are also herbal tinctures that can naturally induce, but really I would literally do anything to avoid pit.

  • You can always just say no.  As a previous poster said, agree to NST often and just wait it out.  My first was born at exactly 43 weeks- no meconioum and she was perfectly pink with 10/10 on her APGARS.  She just needed a little bit more time.  It was a hard road and people were assholes about it, but I am glad I stuck it out.
