I bought Gatorade energy chews as well to sneak in. I'm hoping they work. I starting to think I shouldn't have bought fruit punch tho, in case I do vomit I don't want them to think I'm puking blood.
The national C-section rate is over 30%. Our local hospital is the same. The only reason they restrict your food intake in a hospital is because you've got a good chance of having a C-section. I've opted to use a birth center and midwife, which means no restrictions on food, beverages, movement, or on anything else that could make the birth more comfortable. I may not even feel like eating, but it's nice to know I'm not limited to sucking on ice or sipping broth for energy if I need it.
I will be sneaking food if I'm hungry. I hate that I, an educated 35 year old woman who is capable of reading (hell, writing) the studies that @pepperedmoth posted, has to "sneak" anything.
My doula told us at our first appointment that she'll stand lookout in the hallway if she has to, but I will be allowed to eat if I need to. Her word for restricting food to laboring mothers was "abusive".
My hospital allows liquids while in labor. With DS1, I ate chicken broth, apple juice, and Popsicles. I threw up twice though, so having eaten even that sucked. I feel sick if I don't eat actual food and at "normal" meals times. I was fine during labor and delivery because I was so distracted by everything going on.
Re: No eating while in labor... ?
