New here and need opinion on new OB

Hi, I'm new here, just found out I'm pregnant with my 3rd about 2 weeks ago.  This pregnancy I am going to a new practice because we moved a few months ago.  My 2 previous pregnancies I had a dating ultrasound and my doctor also checked for a heartbeat at the first appointment.  I had my first appointment yesterday at the new practice and they told me they do not do a dating ultrasound, and they will not check for a heartbeat until I am at least 12 weeks.  Does this seem strange to anyone?  Maybe I am just used to my old practice and the way they did things, but I feel like they should at least check for a heartbeat at the first appointment right?  I'm now questioning whether or not I should continue to see them or try to find another new practice.  Thanks for any opinions or advice :)

  • This is actually very normal. My first OB appointment won't actually be until Mar 18 at 10 weeks.  Several of us on the board won't have their first u/s or hear a heart beat till that period. You see early u/s more often with those who have experienced losses which I have but my last two pregnancies have resulted in a baby so my OB is considering me a non-risk at this stage.

  • I think it totally depends what your'e comfortable with.. I think like pp said it's totally normal.  BUT if you feel like more monitoring is important to you there's no reason not to look around and see if you can find an OB who has a schedule more similar to what you're used to.

  • Yup. Normal. My MW doesn't do first appts until at least 10 weeks. I never even heard of dating ultrasounds without a problem until TB.

  • I saw my OB when I was 5w4d and they only did blood work. Now, I do go back this Friday (I'll be 8w5d) for a dating u/s and to see the ob again but I know a ton of practices who don't do early u/s's. Some will only do 1 u/s at 20 weeks unless you go for the NT test. They wait till ~12 weeks to look for a hb too. I would say if you're not comfortable with it though to look for a new OB that does it, if that's what you are looking for. Another option is to go to your GP and ask them for an u/s slip then go to a radiology facility. Just giving you other options!! Good luck and welcome too!!
  • Totally normal. My midwife doesn't see you until 8-10 weeks, and that's just an intake appointment with no ultrasound or bloodwork. I specifically asked for the NT scan at 12 weeks (which is through another office)...otherwise, she tries for a heartbeat at 12 weeks with a Doppler and does the A/S scan at 20 weeks.
