First Day of Period

Hi! I'm new to the bump! We've just decided to start trying to conceive! I do have a question after scoping out the site for a couple of days.

What is considered your first day of you menstrual cycle? I had my first period after stopping birth control in February. It started with about 2 days of spotting and then the heavy bleeding. What day would I count as the first? I haven't started charting (other than the "first" day of my last period), because I was hoping I could just figure it out by counting the days, but I'm finding that is harder than it sounds if you don't know when to even begin the count down.
