New baby is little brother. Little worried about big brother.

My oldest son is 2 years old and doesn't understand that mommy just had a baby. and he's a real attention hog... how do I help him adjust to the new baby? We're still in hospital so I wanted thoughts before going home.

Honestly, fight that battle when you get home.

My 2.5 year old is used to a lot of love and attention too, but baby brother hasn't really phased her. She rotates between smothering him with love and completely ignoring him.

Also, it really helped we kept my DDs schedule the same and just bring little brother along with it. Her whole universe wasn't disrupted and baby doesn't know the difference.

It also wasn't has hard as I thought it'd be to transition at all. I'm still able to do things with her and take care of the baby no problem. After the first week it was pretty much life as usual.

I agree with the pp. DS didn't really want much to do with little brother at first. Then he warmed up to him. Now he alternates between the two. I just keep big brother involved in as much as I can. He loves to help bring us a blanket or diaper. He feels like a big boy when he helps.

DS did have difficulty adjusting to me not being as active when I first came home from the hospital (I had a csection). But that healed and now I am able to keep up with him and pick him up...and as a bonus I can run and jump!

I agree having big brother help out is great. My 22 month old loves to help bathe the baby, throw diapers in the trash, rock her in her RNP. He does get jealous a lot too, and that is inevitable, but he is also very affectionate with her. I have him cuddle up with us when I'm nursing and we watch a show together or I read him a book. For DS, knowing he can have his snuggle time too while I'm feeding the baby has helped.
