Relationship books recs

edited March 2014 in One & Done: Only child

Can anyone recommend any good books about improving/maintaining healthy spousal relationships? I had all the pregnancy/newborn books and now have some parenting books, but nothing to refer to for strengthening my marriage, and I feel like I need one! I need a Manual for Life, haha! TIA.

ETA Background: For those that don't know, DH and I have been struggling since DS was born. We are in therapy together and I will ask our therapist for book recs at our next appt, but I'd love to pick up something now. We are both committed but need help!

Re: Relationship books recs

  • We got a lot out of Babyproofing Your Marriage. And it covers more than pregnancy and the first year.

Does it matter if there's a faith spin? That one doesn't but thinking of some of the other ones that we both found helpful.

Thanks! We are both non-religious so a faith-based book probably wouldn't speak very well to us. :)

  • I make my own crust, I don't like store bought. At least not the ones I've tried in the past.

I also use Alfredo cheese sauce instead of red sauce. Its so good.

  • I have never read it, but heard a lot of good things about the Five Love Languages.... My Mom said it really made a difference for them.

I'm currently reading this. So far I like it and it's a quick read.

So what you're saying is... we should make pizza together? :P
    Pizza CURES all.
    Especially when you make together.

Really though, I have no book recs.  But I'm thinking of you!

  • We're actually not religious either but found it really hard to find anything that wasn't at least vaguely higher power.

But some are low key enough that we could just slide over those parts and still get something useful from the rest. Five Love Languages, for example.

  • I have no recs, but I just wanted to say I am sorry-- marriage stuff is the worst.  We're hanging on by a thread, really.

Okay off topic but this did make me lol.

No book recs but hang in there.  I think it is a great thing you both acknowledge the problem and are going to counseling.  That is a place many people don't get to before it is too late.  Hope it gets better.  One thing I can say is that as your DS matures you will have more time to focus on each other and build your relationship, at least that is our experience.

I'm sorry to hear this. :(
Me too. Hope it gets better for you guys soon.
Thank you all so much for the support and recs. it really means a lot. I think I will give the 5 love languages a try. I've heard a lot about it and one of our biggest problems is miscommunication. If you have any more, please keep em coming!

The Five Love Languages is a good read, very easy to get through.  Kudos for participating in therapy - we are doing that also.  I don't know if this will address your issue or not, but I am starting to read All Joy and No Fun.  It isn't about parenting skills, but about how it changes us, how it is really difficult, and how it affects marriage, work, etc.  I'm really liking it.

Oh I heard an interview with the author on Fresh Air, it sounds like a really interesting book! Good to know you're liking it.

And I forgot to say that the therapist encouraged us to read the book together.  I go to her for individual therapy as well, and so I'm interested in hearing what my husband says about it.
