Vote on Dorian

Dorian is the most recent addition to our boys names list. We both really like it, but I worry it will get negative reactions (as two of our other choices received). Last name is a very popular "B" name, no middle names chosen yet. Our goal is somewhat classic and stable on the charts, not too common, yet something everyone has heard of. Would other kids like it? Suggestions are welcome. Other names at the top of our list (that may or may not fit our goals) are: Collin, Connor, Desmond, Walden, Spencer, Quentin, Elliott, Garrett, Jude, Owen.

  • I know a toddler Dorian. Previous to meeting him, I had never heard of the name before. I love Garrett and Jude.

  • I think of Dorian Gray. But I think it's a perfectly fine name.
  • As a piano teacher all I think of is you're naming your child after a scale.  Dorian, Phrygian, Aeolian, Mixolydian, Lydian, Locrian, etc.... these are all names of scales in music theory.  However, would most people know that?  Probably not.... but I still wouldn't use it because it's weird to me.
  • Never heard of it, but I do like Elliott & Owen
  • Dorian reminds me of durian (the stinky fruit).

From your list I prefer: Collin, Spencer, Elliott, Jude, Owen. I think that Spencer, Elliott or Jude would fit your criteria quite well.

  • The very popular last name beginning with B isn't Brown, is it?  If so, I would rule out Dorian.  Dorian Brown is just too close to Dorian Gray (as in the Oscar Wilde novel).

Otherwise, I like Dorian.  It's unusual but traditional, yet still easy to spell and pronounce.  That's a great, rare combination.

The color association is one of my main hesitations, I'm glad you brought it up. DH didn't seem to mind. Your last sentence there nails what we're going for. Easier said than done

Those are my other favorites too!

  • I don't like Dorian. My first thought was Scrubs, but I just don't like it.

I love every name on your list minus Walden. Garrett or Elliott would get my vote.

  • It's a good name, though I do like both Quentin and Desmond better. Actually, I love Desmond!
