I don't mind most place names. I had never heard of Camden, NJ before this board. I live on the West coast. However, everyone seems to love the name Everett, and I would never use it because it's the name of a major city where I live. So what makes a good place name vs a bad place name? Notoriety?

Live near Seattle? Everett is a suburb known for hookers, meth and crime. I cringe when I hear it as a name!
When you've been married this long, you need a ticker to remind you.

Yep
...We must be neighbors. I also dislike the name Mason because of it's a county with bad associations.
I am not sure why this trend always gets so panned over here. It's like every category of names-- there are some nice place names and some awful place names. Just like there are nice preppy names and awful preppy names, nice vintage names and awful vintage names, nice trendy names and, well, you get the idea.
Place names I love:
Carolina
Savannah
Georgia
Eden
Austin
Chelsea
Hudson
Adair

I also think that there are so many places on this Earth that people don't realize they are naming their child a place, like the example given, Everett. I am from Louisiana and have never heard of that, but here we have a parish called Cameron, I am sure plenty of people name their child Cameron, never knowing that it exists in Louisiana.
Grayson is a town nearby, which is why it's difficult for me to picture it as a name.
Also, I like the names Russell and Marshall, but due to them being "place" names nearby, I don't think I could use them.
ETA: I should clarify that Marshall and Russell obviously don't fall into the "because it's cool" category. They're both legit names, great names at that. Having said that, one of these happens to be the name of the town in which I live.
I have a Grayson and didn't realize it was a place until this thread. I had never heard of Camden the place until it was already on the birth certificate. I still would have picked those names for my sons. I love the names and they are the only names my husband and I agreed on for them
