SS - Vacation - WWYD?

DH randomly texted me asking if I want to go to Vegas for one week...in two weeks. He would have to work during the day but would be in the same hotel we're staying, and would be free nights/we could stay the weekend. This would be a much cheaper work-sponsored way of getting to go on vacation, which otherwise we have been complaining about how much everything costs and probably would have not gone anywhere and later regretted it.

I should have enough vacation days where this won't impact maternity leave plans too much (I'm still deciding this) and my boss won't be thrown by a last minute request because I typically still respond to critical work requests on vacation. I've just never been to Vegas and I'm not sure what I would do with myself, especially pregnant and not drinking. Would you go? Any tips?

I would go! I love Vegas and I'm not a heavy drinker anyway, so not being able to drink is no biggie. Lots of cool stuff to do during the days without him, I would tour the Hoover dam, walk around old time Vegas, see a show. There is tons to do. A free hotel room would make it ever sweeter :)

I went to Vegas while pregnant with my first DS. I was about 4.5 months. There's a lot to do in Vegas other than drink, but most of it requires walking. A lot of walking. If you can justify/afford the expense of cab fares or are willing to take the monorails, the casinos themselves will keep you entertained with their architecture/themes. There are also a ton of shows and some pretty good food to be had in Vegas.

Again, just be prepared for a lot of walking and watch out for the all the smokers! BTW, if it's warm enough, the pool might be a nice way to spend a good chunk of your time too.

    Hope this helps!

Oh yes, good point! 22 out there today but with the wind chill the "real feel" is 10 degrees. Also, DH's birthday is this weekend and we both have been too busy working/tired to make any plans for it.

  • I would go! I would love to just relax at a hotel and lounge by the pool during the days and go out to eat/shop/see shows at night with hubby.

  • I would definately go. Granted I have never been, but from what I hear from friends who live there, there are so many sites to see and shows that you can attend.  I think it would be worth the trip.

  • I may have to fly one way by myself (out there) and weather looks like 72ish. (no idea if tht is too cold for a pool, Gawd it's been a long time since I've been anywhere.) Would you still do it?

  • Go!  The Hoover Dam is pretty cool and easy to get to.  Book a spa day, go shopping, bring some good books and enjoy the people watching! I went early in my pregnancy for a wedding (10 wks) and the only thing that bothered me was the smoke.  So.  Much.  Smoke.  where we were staying.

AND THE FOOD.  ~slobber~  I want a Pink's burger stat.

  • I'm a really big drinker, and prefer to not hang out at bars nowadays...and I'd totally go.  Vegas is super fun and there's a TON to do.  Gambling, walking around, shows, zoos, pools, shopping.  I've actually been tossing around the idea of doing a quick baby-moon there myself.

  • I'd definitely go. No advice on what to do, but the weather alone would be reason enough for me to say yes!

We are doing something similar - taking a cheaper-than-usual vacation in 2 weeks and staying with my aunt in Florida. I think the week away will let us both relax, get some sun and much needed Vitamin D, and just enjoy each other a bit before the baby arrives!

I would go since it only gets harder to travel with kids so enjoy being able to spontaneously pick up and go somewhere fun without needing to coordinate child care or pack like you are moving with all your baby gear. Don't get me wrong DH and I have worked to keep traveling but vacations aren't the same when you have kids. It is amazing to see them experience new things and it is fun in a different way but you still are a parent even on vacation. If work picks up a good deal of the tab I'd enjoy one totally lazy, selfish vacation while you can =)

  • Definitely go, even if flying out alone. There's lots to see (and walking) besides the casinos. Agree w PP about Hoover Dam and Lake Mead area itself is so massive and impressive. We got married an hour outside of Vegas in the mountains and it's so pretty up there. Mt. Charleston is the area we went to.

  • I would go! You can shop, relax by the pool or gamble!

  • I would go! There is so much to do there and you don't need to be drinking to enjoy it. Also it would be getting a little vacation without having to shell out so much money, always a plus.

  • I think it depends on what you're looking to get out of the trip and/or if you've ever been to Vegas before.  I've been to Vegas several times and honestly I wouldn't go while pregnant, but that's ME.  I love going to the clubs and having them basically pay me to come in!  That said, I've also never been to Vegas with any men, not even DH lol, and I don't think I'd ever want to - it's a lot more fun and you get a lot more free stuff thrown at you when you are man-less.  However, like I said, that's me.  I do know there are a lot of other things to do out there that don't involve clubbing/drinking/gambling (though, I suppose gambling is a big one and I don't think I'd like gambling if I had to forgo the free drinks).  There's Hoover Damn, museums, lots of outlet shopping, spas and top notch restaurants.  It's also kinda nice that you wouldn't really have to pay for your hotel, which is typically the biggest cost other than flights.  Also, the pool parties typically start back up in late March, which tells me that it's warm enough there to sit by the pool (I've only ever gone in the summer so I can't comment on experience with the weather this time of year), so there's always that, too.  Have fun if you decide to go!

I believe it's the Paris Hotel.

  • Definitely go. Since you're not drinking, you can put that money toward some spa appointments and nice restaurants. Also go see some shows, lounge by the pool (if it's warm enough), or people watch. The people watching in Vegas is top-notch.
  • I went with DH when he had a conference.  I'm a very light drinker anyway and don't enjoy gambling, but I had a lot of fun.  As PPs mentioned, the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead are worth seeing.  I enjoyed the pool, shopping, restaurants, and shows.  There is a lot of walking, but you can always take breaks.

  • I'm in Vegas now (at 26 weeks). Yes, lots of walking but that's no reason not to go! It's more exercise than I've gotten in weeks! I love to drink and hang out but it's not that hard not to be drinking. There is so much to see during the day and at night. Why some people are aganist it is beyond me. I am here with DH and we are having a great time. And so many food choices! It's wonderful! Go...get a Cronut for breakfast at NYNY hotel. Sticky, sweet and amazing! Go and enjoy a last vaca before baby!
  • I literally just got home from Vegas about 30 min ago. We only went for 2 nights which is more than enough for me (its a close drive for us, so we've been several times and it definitely looses is novelty when you aren't into heavy drinking, clubbing, or gambling).

There's still plenty to do without drinking. We saw a couple shows, walked around some of the shops, and hung out in our room a bit. This weekend was a bit chilly because we got a storm, but it's gonna warm up this week and will definitely be warm enough to at least lounge at the pool.
  • @rileymiller thanks! is it warm enough to sit by a pool/or swim?

  • @Pepper6 - thank you! I am realizing more and more that a little warmth would do me really good. This has been a really hard winter.

Thank you everyone for your help, tips and opinions. I definitely feel like this is more do-able now and even if I'm just wandering a new place alone most of the week it is better than going back and forth in my beat up winter coat to work in this endless winter!

  • Also keep in mind "chilly" for me was low 60s. It's supposed to warm up to low 70s this week and in the sun should be comfortable. I think some hotels heat their pools too so depending on what temp you like it might be warm enough to swim.
  • It definitely is...most days! Our last 2 days there it was in the low 70's, sunny and beautiful!!  It does cool down at night still, but a nice cool :) Go check out the new ferris wheel that is opening very soon. It's insane! Behind the Flamingo...can't miss it! and the O at Bellaigo cirque show is amazing!!
  • Go go go!!
