Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Walkers or no walkers?

Hi,
I am not sure if I should get my DD a walker or not? I have heard many opinions about it & then some who said it is a must.

My DD is 8 1/2 months & crawls backwards & in circles. She kicks her legs around a lot so everyone is telling me to get a walker?

Just curious everyone's opinion about it....

Buy a used one. DS plays with it & has walked with it but it just sits there most of the time., I'm putting it away next month

EDIT: oh you mean a walker they sit in?? Or the toy they push?? I'm in Canada & the ones you sit in are banned. We have the toy you push.
  • DD had one that she pushed. She still loves it even though she is walking and running without any assistance now.

I hear the ones you sit in are no bueno but I had one as a baby and I walked at 8 months so...

  • I have a push one and my son loves it, maybe a little too much. I'm thinking it may actually be interfering with him learning to walk on his own.

We used one with DD....of course, like most things -in moderation. We let her use it for no more than 10 min at a time, twice a day or so. There was no harm. We talked to our pedi about it and he even said, in moderation and if we kept a good watch on her, there is no harm done....if it is the sit ones you are talking about.

  • DD#1 was given a walker as a gift at 7.5 months. She also got a push cart at the same, another gift. She was walking by 9 months.

DD#2 uses these walkers and at 12 months only takes 4 steps before getting down to crawl.

I don't have a problem with walkers. We are very safe and I they are going to walk when they are ready.

  • Not sure which one you mean.  The walkers you sit in, I wouldn't bother with.  The ones you push are a must, it helps them with walking skills.  We have a Vtech Sit to Stand and also the Vtech Alphabet Train and DS loves them both and races them around the apartment all the time.
  • We got a push one, but not until DD was up and cruising holding on to furniture.  We only kept it in the living room and then DD also has one at my MILs house.  I don't know how much she really used either one before she started walking unassisted and lost all interest in them.

Side note: we put papertowels between the wheels and walker (hard to explain) to slow it down when DD first started using it.  The wheels originally rolled so fast that her little legs couldn't keep up so she'd wind up sprawled face flat on the floor.

  • We don't use one. My mother once told me that it could prolong their learning to walk because they can figure out how to go backwards because it's easier. I'm not sure if that is a true statement or not, but I took her advice and never bought one. However I do put him in an exersaucer mainly when I need to use the bathroom.
