Is my crockpot supposed to smell funky???

Here's another cooking foible/question from me: I just got a new crockpot (my other one just decided to die one day....RIP) and it's taking its maiden voyage today w/ a potroast. I started the roast an hour ago and, as the crockpot heated up, I noticed a faint chemical-y smell. I checked everything....it's not near anything it could burn. The only thing I would think is that maybe it just smells weird the first time it heats up? Does that sound even remotely normal??

  • It's probably because it's new. Did you check the inside of the warming part for plastic film from manufacturing?
Yep....had washed the inside part already, so there's nothing there. I hope it's just because it's new!!

  • I'd let it go and then worry if it continues. I love that you referred to this as its maiden voyage!

this. no worries. it should go away after a couple uses. :)
  • Thanks, ladies!! That's what I was thinking, but DH got me all freaked out as he left for work saying "Don't burn the house down." :-P The weird smell does seem to be going away.....or I'm just used to it, and it's mixing w/ delicious potroast smell....so hopefully all is well. :)

  • My Crock Pot has always smelled that way and I've used it a lot. It is annoying but I can't find anything wrong with it and the food tastes fine. I have another that doesn't smell, so I'm not sure what the deal is.
  • Sounds normal to me!! Have fun crock pot cooking, I love it and don't use my collection often enough.

It’s not that I don’t like you, it’s that I don’t know you. Stranger Danger.
