When to change bottle nipple flow

Hey everyone! My son is 5 mo 3 mo adjusted. He's still using level 1 nipple flow for his avent bottles but sometimes I feel like he has to work too hard to get it and was wondering when you all changed to a faster flow? I tried level 2 a while back but it gave him bad gas bc he was getting too much air but I just wonder if he is ready for it now? Thanks in advance for any advice!

    We actually never changed them. He hated the faster flow nipples!
