Iron - anyone else have trouble?

Well, I've been skating along on my target gummy prenatals which don't have iron, but the OB says I'm I'm anemic and need to start taking iron. I'm also super tired. I hate taking Iron b/c of the constipation - anyone have any tips? I've heard prunes, prune juice, and colace. Anyone know if there are any iron supplements that are easier on the gut?
Me - 35. DH - 40. TTC #1 since 9/2010.

  • I swear by colace, I do have to take one in the morning and two at night to stay regular, in addition to one probiotic a day as well.

    Dx shortened cervix, PTL, and preeclampsia during pregnancy.  Lots of medications and 13 weeks of bedrest, babies were born healthy at 34w4d!

  • I take the slow release iron.  I think the brand name is Slow FE, but drugstores make their own generic versions too.  So far, I haven't really had any issues!

  • Yes, I'm seriously anemic.  I have to take iron twice a day.  I think they leave the iron out of the gummy prenatals since the gummies are attractive to kids and too much iron can harm them. 

    As others have mentioned, drinking a lot of water is a good idea.  Prunes and prune juice help too.  I have to take milk of magnesia once in a while as well.  
  • I take Rainbow Light Prenatal One which has 30mg of iron in it. (If you decide to try these make sure to get the One and not the other prenatal vitamin by this brand or you'll be taking 6 pills a day!) I rarely have constipation issues, but I also take a probiotic. I've never had any issues with these vitamins causing nausea or stomach pain. Also, not all prenatal vitamins are created equally. I took the One-A-Day one for almost a year before comparing it to several others only to find out that it was seriously lacking.

    I'm extremely anemic also and my Dr put me on 65 mg of iron 2x/day, in addition to my iron-containing prenatals.  I take the slow release kind - my pharmacist explained that the slow release one breaks down in your intestines, not your tummy - so it's gentler on your digestive system in general.  I take it with food and also take a chewable vitamin C supplement at the same time, b/c iron isn't absorbed unless taken with vitamin C.  Also, colace and plenty of fiber and water, which I do anyway.

  • Colace and Metamucil are suggested to keep you moving. I got so backed up that they told me to take some miralax, but to maintain you can hopefully be okay with Metamucil which just keeps fiber going to your gut.
