Multiples

Felt like a 8-9 week uterus?

Hi everyone!! I just went to the doctor for my first appointment, pretty confident I was 5w 1d because I've been tracking closely & am almost positive when my implantation bleeding occurred. She gave me an exam and as she was feeling around asked if I was 8-9 wks based on my LMP. I said no and she said well, you either are further along or there might be multiples! I'm sooo anxious and have to wait until 3/28 for an ultrasound!! Anyone have a similar experience and ended up pg with twins?

  • Until the ultrasound you won't know for sure. My beta levels are what gave it away before a four week ultrasound. Good luck

I'm honestly not sure how your OB can compare 5 & 8 week uterus sizes.  At 8w an embryo is probably the size of a grain of rice.  When someone is having twins 2 "grains of rice" aren't going to be noticeably bigger than one.

  • Ditto everyone else. I didn't start measuring big/ahead until 18/20 weeks or so and for a while looked smaller than a friend who is the same gestation as me with a singleton.

  • Ditto to pp- if you're 8-9 weeks along or multiples are suspected, you should be going in for u/s much sooner. I'd call my ob on Monday and demand some clarification or get a second opinion.
These can be high risk pregnancies and need to be treated as such. I had u/s starting at 7weeks and once a week until out of 1st tri. I had a previous loss history, so that's extreme, but at least a 7 week u/s makes sense.
  • Agree with pps, your answers will be skewed here and I also agree that she shouldn't have suggested multiples. Talk about a great way to drive a woman crazy!

That said, I had my first exam at 9 weeks and she said my ute felt more like 12 weeks. I didn't think anything of it. My first us was at 20 weeks which is when we discovered twins. Since she made the comment and now you're concerned, go ahead and request an early us!

  • I agree that you won't know until you have an ultrasound and that you should be having one sooner than later. With that being said, I was 9 weeks when I went in for my first appt and ultrasound and the NP first did a manual exam and said, "well that's definitely a pregnant uterus."... Implying that it felt big.
  • Fundal height is not even remotely useful before 15 weeks, like not even a little bit. If your doctor is implying they can tell the difference between 5w and 8w with manual palpating, I would advise you to find a new doctor.

  • Yeah, hCG means nothing.  Mine was right on target for a singleton, and it didn;t rise fast or anything.  I had to have 3 draws to make sure it was doubling at an appriproate rate even, so there you go.  I had zero inkling there were twins until that first u/s.

I would also be asking for an earlier U/S if your doc even suspects multiples or thinks you might be further along.  It's strange to wait so long in either case.

  • Yes your doctor can feel the difference in uterus. Fundal height is a different measurement. She/he sounds experienced. I had the BEST doctor in the province and when I went to her at 11 weeks with quads and she did an internal she was VERY confident to suggest that my uterus didn't feel big enough to be carrying quads. She said more like twins or triplets. I had an ultrasound right away and low and behold there were triplets and the fourth baby heartbeat had stopped two weeks earlier. I heard many times that the second best indication of multiples- second to ultrasound - was the size of the uterus.
    Good luck on the 28th.

  • I didn't have an exam till 12w (at 7w it was just lab work, going over prenatal care, etc.) so I don't know. At 12w I was measuring 12w but I'm not sure about the feel of the size of the  uterus. What Northof54 said is interesting though.

  • I should add, I think that was a little mean of her to throw out "It might be twins" and then leave you wondering for a few weeks. ;) I know if I were in your shoes those days would draaaag by!

  • The only way to know is an ultrasound. My OB didn't even start measuring my uterus until around 24 weeks because there was no point. Even betas aren't a guaranteed answer. Good luck!

  • When we found out we had triplets (u/s at 7w) my OB said, "you know, I thought your uterus felt big at your last appointment!" (which was 4w.)

Of course he could have been full of shit. My chart says I measured 4-6 weeks at that appointment. Who knows. How much of a difference can a few tiny specks make at that point?
