Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Losing Patience

All three of us have been sick with a stomach virus this week. On top of that, DD is teething. We're finally over the sickness and her tooth has popped through. She is still so irritable, whiny, and fussy I don't know what to do. She's not wanting to eat anything or drink. It's a struggle to get something into her. She's had a very rough week, so I'm trying to be patient with her. But nothing we do will calm her down. She fusses even if we give her what she's asking for.

I'm beginning to wonder if this could be the start of the "terrible 2s." My mom said that's what it sounded like to her. And if that's the case, I'm going to need lots of prayers! :)

Does it just take a while for toddlers to get over being sick? I really don't have anything to compare it to. We're very lucky, because this is the first time she's been sick.

Re: Losing Patience

  • If she's had diahrrea I'd get her checked for a uti.

  • My kids had the stomach bug last week and my 14 month old was cranky for a few days after it, even once the sickness was physically gone. She was extra clingy and needy...I will admit it was challenging, even though I felt bad for her...but it did pass after 2-3 days.

She did have it, but it's gone now.

Thanks. I'm hoping that's all it is and she'll be better by the end of the weekend. If not, I may call her pediatrician back and get an appointment next week.

  • She may just not feel great still.  We had a stomach virus last week and I got sick on Monday and I didn't feel like myself till the following Sunday.  My DD bounced back quicker but she didn't eat much all week.

I know it's hard but just give extra snuggles.  If she really seems in pain then take her to the pedi to get checked out.
  • This was us EXACTLY last week. LO and I and DH all had the stomach flu, he had a tooth coming through, and after he was over everything he was still being SO miserable--tantruming over everything. For him, I think it was a combo of still being sick-ish, and being really overtired from having been sick and not napping well. We gave him a few 2 nap days and a few days of early bedtimes and he is much more himself now!! I was Terrified that it was just the new normal, but thankfully he is back to his sweet self (for the most part).

Glad I'm not the only one. It's been the worst week EVER!!!
