1st Trimester

6 month old and now pregnant with twins...what do I do?

I'm just shy of being 28 years old.  At 22 I had a miscarriage [with my now husband], tried forever to conceive, gave up.....Then we finally [while not trying] conceived our daughter last year.  Sick during the whole pregnancy, developed preeclampsia around month 5-6, was put on bed rest at home, that lasted almost 2 weeks and then I was admitted into the hospital for 7 days before my protein got so bad they took her by C-section at 34wks/5days.  Perfectly healthy, never had to go to the NICU!

Needless to say, we were NOT planning on having another for a few years....was put on birth control, used condoms........and low and behold, 3 positive tests later, we're expecting again!  Went to the ultrasound recently to determine how far we were and it showed that we are 2 months and expecting TWINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are scared out of our minds with the realization that if they're born early like our 1st, then we could have 3 kids under the age of 1!  We're scared of not knowing if we'd have to quit one of our jobs, we're scared about finding a babysitter, we're scared about how we're going to do any of this......most of all, we're very scared about my health!!!!!!  It was even brought up if we should even go through with it?!

Our family doesn't know yet...........and I need some advice because I'm going insane keeping everything locked up inside of me!

Anyone?!?!?!?  HELP?!?!?!?!?!

  • You likely need to have a serious conversation with your OB about your health that might guide you to a decision.

  • One thing at a time.

You need to visit with your OB soon about your concerns. Is this who you asked if you could even bear the pregnancy?

Did you discuss your risks of recurrence? Depending on severity, recurrence ranges from 5-80%, but the average is 20%. You're also with the same partner, which reduces your chances of recurrence.

Your OB knows your history and can monitor you to catch things early. I had HELLP with DS and freaked out when I found out I was pregnant this time, but it helped me to realize that there is little I can control at this point. I can take care of myself and follow doctor's orders... And that's about it.

I don't want to add to your panic, but the average delivery of twins is at 35 weeks.

(((Hugs))) you will get through this.

  • Wow!! Congrats! I completely understand your fears! I would be a complete wreck!! You do need to talk to you OB ASAP about your health concerns and the future of our pregnancy. You do have a little one at home that really needs you. Take it one dy at a time. Things seem to have a way of working out.
  • Wow!!!!!!!  It'll take some time to process all this - take some breaths and try to relax.  Our twins were a total surprise too, although we didn't have any other children, so I can't imagine!

The multiples board is great, I loved it there!

  • My twin sister and I came along 13 months after my older sister. Although exhausting for my mom, it was a great way to grow up with my siblings so close to me. You're kids will be very close, so it's worth it!
  • You'll find a way to make it work. Just breathe! Good luck to you!
