Charlotte nickname

My little girl is named Samantha and we have always called her Sammy.  We love the name Charlotte if this is a girl and my DH loves the idea of making Charlie the nickname.  He loves the idea of two little girls thAt go by Sammy and Charlie.  I think it's cute, but wanted some outsider input.  What do you think of Charlie as a nickname.

Re: Charlotte nickname

  • Do not name your girl Charlie.

  • I think it's fine
  • Loading the player...
  • It is fine but very over used right now. I prefer Lottie as a nn for Charlotte . Very fresh
  • For the record we did not want boys.  We already have two.  We started calling her Sammy because my then four year old couldn't pronounce Samantha.  For the record she is super girly.  I do like Lottie and will probably go with that.
  • I actually love it. :) but maybe spell it Charly instead of Charlie?
  • I like the idea of spelling it Charly.
  • i like it, a lot.

  • I love it! (I do not like the nn Lottie as others have suggested though). I know a little girl named Charley - after her uncle Charles who passed away; I think it's really cute. I say do it!

I understand.  I'm just speaking as an outsider looking in.  I think Sammy is rather adorable and goes with Samantha well because the "sam" sound is actually in the name.

Charlie is just too boy for a girl.
    I understand..thanks for the input.
  • Let me clarify.  We would have been happy to have a boy.  But did not secretly wish that our girl was a boy.  I realise I stated it wrong.  But I was replying to the suggestion we didn't want girls do to nickname.  Just put it wrong.

OP, sorry, but this statement really rubs me the wrong way... /:)

I've known a couple who go by Charli and it fits them well. Charlie is not a "boy name", it's a nickname. Charles is a boy name.
Charlie is a nn and could fit a boy named Charles, or a girl named Charlotte.
Otherwise, I've also heard the nn Char (like Shar)...:?
  • My brother in law just had a little one they named Charlotte in December, with the intention of calling her Charlie, but my mother in law has taken to calling her Lottie instead and none of us really like it. I definitely prefer Charlie to Lottie.

  • I like Charlie as a nn for a girl, but beware that it is rather popular right now.

  • Love Lottie as a nn. If DH hadn't vetoed Charlotte, that's what I would have gone with.

I love Sammy on a little girl.......it IS a nn for Samantha
  • Charlie makes me think of that Disney Channel show - "Good Luck Charlie". In the show, Charlie is a little girl whose real name is Charlotte. So, I think that it has become more and more recognizable as a girl's nn for Charlotte. I think I like Lottie better as a nn, but that is just my opinion.

btw - I also know a couple of Sammys - both female with Samantha as a given name. I've never met a male who goes by Sammy.

Agreed. Super cute. Much better than Lottie. Sammy and Charlie are adorable together.
  • I really like Charlie personally; I think it's sweet. Granted, I just generally love the name Charlie.

  • Also, using Lottie as NN for Charlotte is not "fresh", seeing as it is the original NN for the name.

  • I think nn come out of knowing a person;  sometimes it's an offshoot of the person's name but sometimes it's not.  My DD's nickname is not even related to her name but to something from when she was a few days old;  my nephew's nn is what he used to call himself when he was first learning to talk etc.  I find it funny that people want to pick nns for someone they haven't even met yet

  • I pronounce Charlotte like Char-let so Lottie is not instinctual for me. Instead, I prefer the nn Etta.

"Fresh" meaning, making a come back and replacing the very over done Charlie nn.......which is cute, but over done.

Maybe so, but it's been a common family practice in my husband's family and I don't think anyone has suffered for it.

Edit:  Sorry that came out ruder then I had intended.  I understand how you feel, just something we started with the kids. However, when they are older they definitely chose what they go by.  Our, oldest who is nine, will only go by un-shortened first name.

  • My mom's name is Charlotte and a few people call her Charlie.  She likes it.
