ER visit UPDATED

edited March 2014 in October 2013 Moms
I blacked out again today. I was standing up and I got extremely dizzy and nauseous. I was holding Jude. I set him down and everything went black. I came to and called my husband and he rushed home from work and got both of us. We went to instacare and they immediately sent us to the emergency room. I'm going to get an ultrasound to make sure it's nothing to do with my mirena and if that's looking okay I'm heading in for a CT scan. I'm worried but I'm ready to figure out what's wrong with me. I could use some good thoughts and/or prayers. Thanks bumpies.

Update: I'm home from the ER. They did an EKG test, a lot of blood tests, and a CT scan. Everything came back normal. They don't think it's my IUD. I'm so thankful nothing is seriously wrong but it sucks that we still don't know what's going on with me. They are sending me to see a neurologist next week and I will be getting an MRI sometime in the next few days. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers!

  • Does the nausea and blacking out happen more when you have just stoops up recently? Does it happen more when you are tired or haven't drunk enough water?
  • I am just seeing this, I have been so busy and not on very much lately. Hope all is well and it is nothing major, Thoughts, prayers and E HUGS!

It honestly has no rhyme or reason to it. It's hard for me to tell that it's coming but it's always.. Dizzy, nauseous, and then I lose my vision if that's gonna happen. It's been happening more and more lately and I believe it started in December (around the same time I got mirena) but that might just be a coincidence. It might be because I'm BF and dehydrated. They really don't know.

Did they test you for "orthostatic hypotension"? It is a condition where you get dizzy/pass out if you sit up too quick after lying down, stand up too quick after sitting, or make any other positional changes before your blood pressure has time to adjust. The time it takes to adjust is a lot longer when you haven't drunk enough liquids and eaten enough salty foods.

I have this and breastfeeding makes it worse because my body is always less hydrated than normal--even when i drink lots of water. I have found that Gatorade is very good to keep me from the dizziness/nausea.

Maybe ask your doctor about it if they haven't tested you for it?

  • Scary! I've had several times in my life where I passed out - so scary!! For me it was stress related though. Good luck. I hope they figure it out.
  • Oh no! I'm glad it didn't seem to be too serious!

This has happened to me in the past a handful of times. It was always because I hadn't eaten enough and my blood sugar got really low. That combined with standing up too quickly, like sooner said, always had me on the floor.

  • So scary! Take care mamma. Hope things get figured out soon with the neuro appt/MRI. In the meantime you'll def be in my prayers!

And be sure to hydrate like sooner said. Ginger ale, Gatorade, etc plus water.

  • Have you ever had Vertigo? I get it all.the.time and it is pretty much exactly what you're describing. They prescribe Antivert and it helps tremendously when an episode hits. It's an inner ear issue and a lot of times they cant really diagnose it, it's more like trial & error. I would ask the doctor if that's a possibility. I had to go to PT for mine, it didn't really help much but the Antivert helps A LOT when it hits me. I hope they can get things figured out for you soon. It's definitely scary to not know what's going on. ((Hugs))

I honestly don't even remember what they tested for. The took 8 things of my blood and I know they ran a bunch of things. He asked me how I felt when I changed positions but I couldn't remember if it was every time and if there was a correlation. It does kind of sound like what you are describing so I will for sure ask the doctor about it this week! Thank you.
