NBR - Rug size for nursery?

edited February 2014 in May 2014 Moms
Hey all! Looking for opinions on what size rug to get for LO's room.

The room is pretty small, about 9.5x10. So when you add in the dresser, crib, and recliner, there's not much floor space left. (see pic).

Well, I found this awesome rug at West Elm (see pic) for sale and love the color, but can't decide if 2x3 will be too small or not. The 5x8 I think will be too big and awkward, and not sure I'm willing to spend $250 on that size either.

What do you guys think?

Re: NBR - Rug size for nursery?

  • I personally think that it really depends on the placement, that size (2'x3') is really small, like "welcome" mat small, I probably wouldn't use it in a bedroom... But, if you were thinking to put it in front of a changing table, or in front of the closet, or something like that, it might not look out of place.  To just put it in the middle of the room I think it may look a little odd though.

  • I was expecting our 5x8 rug to be a little more filling (for lack of a better word) in our 10x11ish (I think, it might be 10x12) nursery. It doesn't look particularly bad, but it also just kinda hangs out in space. I'd think a 2x3 would make a good rug to go in front of the crib or the changing table but not a room feature.

  • 2x3 sounds tiny, I don't think it would work. Why don't you try putting some newspaper down on the floor to try out the different sizes, it will give you a better idea of what it will look like.

  • Definitely depends on the look/function you're going for.  Our bedrooms have hardwood floors, so I have room-size area rugs.  But if the room has carpet (looks like it does?) and you just want a rug to put in front of the crib or changing table, I think 2x3 is fine.

  • There's also the option of sewing two 2x3 together to get a 4x3. I've seen them do it on hgtv, no idea if it looks good IRL.

  • 2x3 is really small.

Our nursery is 8x10 and we got a 4x6 rug. It fits perfectly but any smaller would be too small. I'd say try that size for your room.
  • Our nursery is 10x10 and will also be DDs room as well. We got a 3x5 rug and its just right with all the furniture.
  • Ds1's room is about 10x10 and the rug we have is 5x8; it fills the center of the room perfectly. Anything smaller would have been weird.
