Paci weaning -- when, where, how

I figured I would start weaning DD from the paci at 18 mos.  Problem is lately she seems MORE attached to her "B" as she calls it, not less.  When did you or when do you plan to wean from the pacifier and how?  I'm thinking I might have to go with the cutting off the tip route for DD because I don't think she would understand some of the other options out there (mailing it to a needy child, etc.) but am open to suggestions.  TIA!!

  • Super Nanny mailed them to the paci fairy for other babies and then the next day the child got something in the mail. Why I remember that I don't know!

  • Is she allowed to have it any time during the day?  We are *starting* to wean but we allow him to have it in his crib.  So when he gets up, we make a game of throwing his "nukky" back in his bed.  I still take one everywhere with me in case he melts down on an errand.

My cousin is cutting the tip off, like you said - and just tells her DS that it broke.  He hasn't seemed to have a problem with that.

  • my 16m old only uses it for nap time but i'd like to wean before she's 2 --at least... when she's done with nap or wakes up in the morning we have her give it to one of her stuffed animals that has an open mouth (grover or ernie). you could try doing that but permanently. (we say something like, grover needs it for his sleepy time or grover's turn for paci)
  • DS never used one, but my niece did. To take her off her binky, my brother's wife just told her that auntie (me) was pregnant and needed the binky for the baby. She realllllly wanted to meet the baby so she gave it up.
  • There's a development spurt at 18 months, and for my DD and most of the ones I know it included separation anxiety.  It might be easier to do once she gets through it.

I think my DD is getting her 2 year molars.  So we'll try to get rid of hers after they come in.  But I try to limit the paci use to the crib and the car when she's not cranky from the teeth.
