Activity mats/cushions?

Must be a flooring questions type of day.  :)

So I want to get something to put on our wood floors so Mikayla can play and I don't have to worry about grabbing her if she falls over (she's really good at sitting but hasn't quite mastered how to lean towards something without facediving).  I'd like something with more cushion than a rug, but not too soft so she can work on crawling and such.  I was thinking of maybe an interlocking mat like these:

Anyone use anything like this?  Thoughts?  Is it better that it's in pieces or would a single foldout mat be easier?

Re: Activity mats/cushions?

  • We use those and have the whole playroom covered.  Pro and cons to multiple sections- they are easier to clean if you have a spit up or something  and easy to move if you need (our playroom doubles as our formal dining- only use it rarely for dining)

Con, the kiddos love to play with the mat itself- pulling up the edging and sections.  I love having the mat, so don't mind putting them back in place.  I have both the alphabet ones and the big ones you showed- prefer the big ones 'cause they are harder to tug apart.

Also, you can find them all at Ross or Marshalls.

  • I see things like that everywhere - usually with letters and numbers.  I think even at IKEA maybe.   So look around for deals on them.  But I think those are good b/c you can move them and reaarrange them for different spaces.  You can make the number ones into hopscotch later :)

Anyway, those seem like a good idea to me.  Plus, they're not slippery so when she starts walking tha twill be good too.

  • We have one in DS's playroom.  I bought it at BRU, although I have seen similar ones at Lowe's as well.

  • I was just at KB Toys this past week and saw them on sale for 50% off since they are going out of business.  I went to the one in North Bend but there was only one left.  If you can find another store or look there you might be able to find it for a really good price.  DH and I stocked up on some baby toys.  Store signs said 50-70% off on all items.
