Anyone else dealing with RLS?

For the past week I have not been able to sleep due to RLS (restless leg syndrome). Just curious if anyone else is dealing with it and if you have found anything that helps. I do not drink caffeine and I am eating a banana a day. I was told that is supposed to help and at this point I will try anything.

Re: Anyone else dealing with RLS?

  • Yes!

I've been taking hot baths with eucalyptus/mint bath salts to help me relax. I get into bed right away after the bath. 3/5x - this does the trick.

  • Our tub is broke :( I have been running warm water over them at night. My legs start around 8pm and i am up with them till around 3am :/
  • Yes it is horrible!  I have read (and will be picking some up) that taking magnesium pills can help.  Since that is the reason for the banana but in a larger dose.  I have been dealing with it for 2 weeks and as of yesterday it started while driving the car. It is mostly my right leg which is not good for the driving :/  Oh it also feels a little better if I sleep on that side with my right leg on the bottom and my pregnancy pillow in between my legs.  I think maybe the pressure from my other leg helps.

  • Yes, I have this and it's TERRIBLE. I haven't found a way to prevent it or to make it go away. Just wanted you to know you are not alone.

  • I am so glad and sorry that there are others. My husband thinks im crazy cause I have been sleeping on the couch but I cant keep them still. If I move them slowly together it seems to help a very little bit. And yes I have been noticing that it is happening earlier and earlier. Blah.....
  • I have my hubby rub my legs for me almost every night. It seems to help some :)

  • I get RLS flare-ups when the baby has growth spurts. I increase my calcium and magnesium, try to eat more potassium (there are lots better sources than bananas, BTW), and keep up with my workouts. I also try to drink more fluids and avoid salt and sugar in the evening.

  • Stretching helps me sometimes, but it definitely still sucks! I am trying to do hypnobabies and I have to throw in the towel pretty often.

  • I have RLS, even when I'm not PG.  I actually take a daily medication (and have so for several years) to help with the symptoms.  When I first found out we were expecting, I attempted to wean myself off the medication- but I was unsuccessful.
During that time, I found that hot baths right before bed with a eucalyptus bath salt/oil helped immensely.  I have also heard that putting a bar of soap under the fitted sheet is supposed to help but I never tried. There are articles online of natural remedies that you can take but unfortunately, RLS is very common in pregnancy and typically goes away immediately after birth.
  • I always find iron supplements to help, but I have also heard that tonic water (because of the quinine in it) also works, though I haven't tried it.

  • I get cases of RLS at bed time. My prenatal yoga teacher told me to do some yoga stretches before bed that's helped me.  If it got worse to go see an acupuncturist.
  • I have rls also, and it is really flaring up. Thanks for the suggestions, hopefully it gets a bit more manageable soon!
