Health care system

I am a little frustrated because Levi has this growth on his finger.  It is big, and getting bigger.  We went to the family dr, she sent us for an x ray, which we had to wait for her to call us back to talk about the x ray.  I get the appointment for that saying it was about referring him to a plastic surgeon, but when I got there she said that she would rather refer me to a pediatrician, who would hopefully refer him to a plastic surgeon.

I am aware that there is a process, and a way to do things, so that they are done correctly, but It just seems like a lot of steps to get someone who can actually do something for him to see him.  My sister was referred to a pediatrician in December, and didn't get an appointment until March.  So I guess I shouldn't expect a call anytime soon.

Re: Health care system

  • exactly, but you cannot get to see a pediatrician unless you are referred  for a specific issue. It's like seeing a specialist.

  • Are you with an HMO?  It can be hard to see a specialist within those systems because they have fewer of them and the wait time is long.  We have had similar issues with our HMO.  If it is getting worse, though, and causing him problems I would go back to the family doctor and ask them to help you get seen sooner.  They should be able to help you out if the problem is urgent.

  • Aha.  Yes, pretty much the same thing.

  • @laceyjean1 did they say what the growth was? Maybe your GP wants a pedis opinion on which specialist would be best before making a referral. If the growth is a cyst, it is plastic surgery. If it's a joint abnormality it could be orthopaedics.

Perhaps the pedi will investigate the cause for the growth and do further follow up?

  • It is mostly cartilage.  Honestly, I feel that she feels she is in over her head with making the decision to remove the growths, and wants a second opinion.  Originally we were supposed to go straight to plastic surgeon, but she seemed really unsure today.  I respect that, but oh the waiting.

  • I'm sorry @laceyjean1, I can empathize! I'm in NS and we've been waiting a year for a GI specialist for DS1.
