How to Register

Hey ladies! I was just wondering if any of you had started the process of or have finished registering. We are thinking of starting this weekend and I was wondering if you registered for the same items at different stores. Also, for those that have used Amazon, have you duplicated items in physical locations? What if there was an item that you could only get shipped (through the store or amazon?) This is so much more overwhelming than when we registered to get married. I'd love your thoughts!

To be very honest, I didn't register. I just made a list and shared it with the host of the shower,so that when people asked, she could share with them. I worked on the theory of keeping it simple.
  • I just registered for everything at target. You can manage the registry online so that made it easy. I thought it would be easier for us to just get it all from one place to make returns/exchanges easier etc. Plus that way I didn't have to keep track of what we registered for where.

  • I love/hate BRU, so we are currently working on registries on Amazon and at Target.  Most of our items are from Amazon (most people we know use online shopping a good portion of the time), and in case people want to pick them up in person (or are late to our shower or something), we have a smaller list at Target.

I think Target also had better/comparable prices for bottles, a baby monitor, and a few other more random items.  We didn't duplicate though... even though I thought about it.
  • SIL just asked if she can throw us a shower next month when we go to MO to visit (hell yeah!), so we had to register quicker than we planned. We went to Target, looked at some things in person, and registered using Target's website. I Googled "baby shower must have items" and got some helpful tips, and Target had some resources too.

FWIW-The Target website was helpful because there were lots of reviews, (one of the reasons I love Amazon so much) so - for example when I was looking for a stroller, my first step was to search all strollers, filter by type, then sort by user review. Checked out the ones with more 5 stars first, if they fit our personal preference criteria and decided that way.

As for duplicating items, if guests know we are registered at Target, they can easily go online and find our registry. If they want to buy it from Amazon (or Kohl's or BRU, etc) I figure they can always do the search and price comparison themselves. I don't care where it comes from, and if they save a buck - good for them!

If they item I wanted was ONLY on Amazon, I'd probably buy it myself. I wouldn't want to create  separate registry for just one item, and definitely do not want to do more work than I have to.

The registry process started out overwhelming, but ended up being really fun when I got into it. yay baby stuff!

I went for simple. I registered at buy buy baby for the bulk of the registry. Then my cloth diapers I did all on amazon because of the selection. It is a bit overwhelming. Good luck.
  • We registered at BRU and Target. The big stuff we only registered for at one or the other (swing, bouncer, travel system, etc) but the little stuff (bottles, pacifiers, etc) we registered for at both. I figured if we get double of the little stuff, we could still definitely use it.

  • I've registered on Amazon and Target sites.  We don't have any chain baby stores locally, so I didn't see the point.  As far as Amazon goes, I've duplicated a few things from Target, but keep a close eye on it so nothing is double-purchased (will delete an item if I see it's been bought).

I am loading up my Amazon one because I get 15% off towards the due date.  Wahoo!  Will be utilizing that, definitely.

  • My tip is to sync multiple registries through myregistry.com, I used to sync one from target, amazon and Walmart - plus you can add ransoms items from anywhere online, like etsy.

Other tip - Lucie's list just updated their "crib sheet" for 2014 which has a nice condensed list of registry "must haves" with recommended brands, I found it really useful. Would try to add link, but bumping from my phone and can't find it right now :/

  • Thanks for all the tips! I can see the light!
  • If you are registering at BRU, I'd call ahead and schedule to have a consultant walk around with you explaining all the big ticket purchases. We didnt know we could have someone walk around with us but we went so early in the morning that all the consultanfs on the floor were able to help us make the difficult decisions.

Btw - baby registering sucks. Its not nearly as fun as the wedding reg. Make sure to pack some snacks and have some water handy. It takes freaking forever.
