How long did you labor at home?

Question for those with twins who attempted/succeeded with vaginal delivery and weren't induced, how long did you labor at home before heading to the hospital? How far along were you? Had you given birth previously?

With DD, I went into labor around 6:30 pm, went to the hospital at midnight, and delivered at 4:30 am. Probably considered a shorter labor. My water didn't break on its own and I was strep neg. I'm wondering how my twin labor will differ if all the stars align to allow me a vaginal delivery.

  • Great question.  I've been wondering about this too.

Assume the exit position, Little Ones! I hope this will apply to me, too. With DD, I had some contractions all throughout the day which got more consistent around bed-time and woke my DH up around 2:00am (next day) when my water broke. She arrived at 7:56am.... 4 minutes before shift change. However, it was determined when we were at the hospital that she was facing the wrong way. After kneeling over a birthing ball for a few minutes, things went very fast...

  • I haven't had my twins yet, but I don't plan on laboring much at home at all.  I was only in labor for 9 hours with my DS and it would have been probably 7 if my dr had shown up when she was supposed to.  They told me for my next baby to come in right away and not labor at home since usually your first labor is the longest.
  • Fingers crossed baby A flips so I can do a vaginal delivery and labor at home. With DD I went in within 20 minutes of my water breaking because there was a significant amount of blood and DH panicked. It turned out to be nothing to worry about, but since my water was broken they wouldn't let me go and started the 24 hour clock. I ended up going longer than 24 hours, but the doctor let me go past the 24 hours since there were no signs of infection and I was finally starting to progress. So I'm hoping for things to be different this time around - and I've been told by my OB assuming no problems, I can labor at home for a while.

  • My singleton labor was a lot like yours. I labored at home even after my water broke, went to the hospital and had a straightforward vag delivery. 10 hours start to finish.

I would play it by ear, but plan on heading in sooner rather than later. The moment my water broke w my twins, the contrax came on strong. Immediately 7min apart and painful. I just knew there wasn't much time to waste. Intuition, whatever.

I knew I needed a c/s bc of a breech baby a, but would have been fine laboring a bit to help try and push fluid out of their lungs. But it just didn't feel right and I'm glad I rushed. Baby a's cord had prolapsed and I needed an emergency c/s (no time for a spinal - they knocked me out). Time from my water breaking to babies being born was just over 75 minutes.

I know I'm an extreme example, but I'd plan on going in pretty soon after labor starts.

I had to have my twins via C-sec (preplanned because A was breach). But, my water did break and I went into labor. What I can tell you is that it was MUCH faster then with my singleton.
With my first my water broke at about 5am, and I didn't go to the hospital until about noon. I think I was around 4cm when I got there. She was born at 2:30am.
With the twins my water broke around 5:30am and instantly labor started. I got to the hospital about an hour later and was feeling painful and consistent contractions. They checked me at 7am, and I was already at almost 6cm. Had I not had to have a c-section, it wouldn't have been much longer!

  • My twin birth was/is my 1st and only delivery.  My water broke @ 2:45 am @ 32w3d.  I showered while DH packed the hospital bag.  Once at the hospital, my contractions began.  DS was born @ 1105 and DD was born @ 1122.

  • My first labour was 15hrs (laboured for 8hrs at home). Second was only 3 (planned home water birth). Because of the last one being so short, I'll be heading to the hospital right away with my twins! The last thing I want is to be having them in the car!
  • My water broke at about 5am and contractions started right away. I showered, ate breakfast, and got to the hospital about 7. I was anxious because baby A had been flipping a lot in the final weeks so I didn't want to risk him coming out feet first. Luckily, u/s in L&D showed both babies were head down. They were born at 1:30 and 1:50pm. It was about 1/3 as long as my first delivery and a million times easier.
