GMD vs OsoCozy prefolds?

Hello all - expecting baby #2 this May/June, and it's been a while since I've CD'd a newborn (DD is 3 1/2).

Last time, I used mainly KL0s and a couple of AIOs (BGs to be specific), and I'm going to be going in this route again, but I think I'm considering playing around with some pfs, just for fun - at least until we get to my pockets and WAHM fitteds.

I know I read a blog post SOMEWHERE about the difference between GMDs pfs and the OsoCozy unbleached pfs, but I don't remember where I read it or what exactly it said, so I thought I'd consult the CD board - does anyone have experience between these two and have a recommendation as to why someone would choose one over the other?  (There seems to be a slightly price difference, and GMD looks cheaper)

Any other pf advice is much appreciated - TIA!

  • I use osocozy. They have fewer sizes than GMD and don't have colored edges, so it might be harder to find the size needed (thinking of my husband here).

  • I've heard the quality is the same but like PP said, GMD has more sizes so you can get a trimmer fit on your LO.  I really liked my orange-edge GMDs for the new NB stage.  We brought DS home at 6 lbs. 1 oz. and he was in them for about 3 weeks (I had to initially fold down the back).  Also, not sure what you are looking to spend or how adventurous you are, but I love my GMD flats.
My DD was 8#5oz and so far this baby seems to be measuring ahead, so I'm planning (as much as one can plan, of course) on this being another 8# baby.

@afwifelife - I really know very little about flats - I know the essential difference between flats and prefolds (prefolds being prefolded, correct, so the center portion is already thicker) - but that's about it.  How do you use flats and why would you recommend them over pfs?

  • I've used GMD, OsoCozy and Diaper Rite prefolds. They are all of equal quality, IMO. You'll be find getting any of them.

  • Flats take longer to fold but can be folded to fit any size baby. As baby grows, you switch to a different fold instead of a different size. They can also be folded inside a cover or used to stuff a pocket.

I had both NB GMD and Osocozy prefolds for the newborn stage. They were both good, but I preferred the GMDs. The sizing of Osocozy was strange to me. They are narrow and long. So by the time I didn't need to fold down the extra bulk they wouldn't snappi anymore. My LO was 8.6 at birth fwiw.

I plan to buy more NB GMDs with baby #2.

I'm not sure if this is a new change, but my osocozy prefolds have colored edges:

I started with the newborn size, and now have moved to the infant 4x8x4 size.

The reviews I read said that the OsoCozy were comparable in quality to GMD, so I went with the OsoCozy because they were cheaper.  No problems so far, but I can't comment on how they compare to the GMD.

  • When I registered, osocozy had 3 size choices. I didn't realize it had changed so much in such a short time!

  • Also, one other thing I found confusing when I was first looking is that there are two different sizing systems apparently for OsoCozy diapers.  In the link I included above, you can see that there are quite a few different options for sizing, very similar to GMD. I know some other posters can chime in better on what size OsoCozy correlates to the size for GMD.

  • The size 1 and size 2 are what I have. I think the size 1 replaces GMD small/medium sizes. They fit 7-15 pounds.
I see it as a choice between closer fit with more sizes or less expensive but bulkier fit with fewer sizes.

  • I have osocozy prefolds, GMD prefolds, GMD cotton flats and DiaperRite bamboo flats. I feel that the GMD are softer than Osocozy but not by much. I know GMD have beeter resell value in the end. also the flats... LOVE THEM... here are some picures of easy folds for aborbancy and size of baby.
  • I think you could also prefolds your flats ahead of time, so they would almost be like a fitted. Maybe easier for other caregivers?
  • I have both, and quality-wise, I think they are the same. GMD does fit better, since they are sized, so I prefer them. I also think it is a great, small, family owned company that puts a lot of time and personal touches into their business, so I really like to support them.

  • This has been amazingly helpful - thank you ladies!

One last question - if I go with GMD (which look cheaper - at least in comparison with buying the OsoCozy at my local CD store - would you recommend unbleached, white, or organic?  Again, I think I read somewhere that one of those three was better/softer/etc., but I don't remember what it said.  I blame the baby for the lack of brain functionality (not that I ever regained it after DD).

  • So you haven't noticed a difference in terms of softness or longevity - it's mostly a color preference?

  • When I was doing reasearch like two years ago I read somewhere that unbleached last slightly longer than bleached because they've been processed less. But I think we're talking four kids vs five kids kind of last longer. :)

  • Will you use bleach in your wash routine? I have spots on some of my previously unbleached prefolds and flats because I got a little too aggressive in my war on yeast.

  • Great question - I only ever bleach my diapers if we deal with yeast.  Since I'm currently planning on using pfs only during the nb  (pre-OS) stage, I'd love to plan to NOT have to deal with yeast, but that obviously isn't necessarily up to me.  Maybe I should get bleached for that reason...

  • Eh, if you bleach properly you won't get those marks. I have unbleached prefolds and have been battlin yeast. So bleaching a lot! And no marks on my prefolds.

I did somehow get one of my wipes-- but one thing out of an entire load isn't a reason to buy one thing or another. IMO
