Breastfeeding

Pumping quantity question

DD is 7 weeks old and I pump once a day after her MOTN feeding in order to add to my freezer stash for when I go back to work.

Some nights I get as much as 5 ounces and others I get only 1-2 ounces. I'm not worried about my supply because DD is gaining and has enough wet/dirty diapers.

I'm wondering how/why there is such a difference in quantities when I've been consistent about what time I pump and even what breast she last fed off of. Is this normal?

Re: Pumping quantity question

  • What PP said. I know from bottle feeding, sometimes he eats 1 ounce and sometimes 6. You could guess how much she's eating based on how long she's on the breast but even that's not a good indication, sometimes DS can lazily eat 1 ounce over 30 minutes and he can chug 6 in 10 minutes flat.

Also as an EP'er, my volume varies anywhere from 2.5-5 ounces depending on the time of day, how tired/stressed I am, how long it's been since I've pumped, if I've eaten well, etc.
