tell me how your bed transition went

How did it go when you moved LO out of the crib?

So far, we had a crazy night that ended with DS back in his crib, an okay night where I threatened to put him back in his crib, a looooong night where he took two hours to fall asleep, and a great night tonight.

The bad thing is, he has yet to nap in the bed. The first day, he fell asleep in the car and woke before I could get him in the bed. The next day (Sunday), he took too long to fall asleep and we had to leave for the afternoon before he even fell asleep. Today, he never fell asleep. After an hour, I just let him get up, but he reeeeeally needs his nap.

So, just curious if you had nap issues with LO, and how long it took LO to adjust to falling asleep easily in the big kid bed.

Re: tell me how your bed transition went

  • Ours was meh. DD2 was sleeping like crap, so we figured we might as well transition (plus we were going to need the crib for baby boy anyway). Didn't get worse or better. Naps were definitely harder than night time though - I think it's because they're not as tired at nap time as they are at night, you know?

  • We had a pretty rough transition, but it was an entire year ago, so she was only 18 months old.  There was a lot of getting out of bed and running with around with the new found freedom during naptime, and I would just shut her gate and leave her in there.  After a couple days of that, she finally crashed; not napping was catching up with her.  I had to spend a lot of days laying with her until she fell asleep, which kinda sucked.

  • I can't lay down with him for naps - I'm almost always feeding DD right around the same time, or she wakes up from a nap or something.

Bleh... I'm not ready to be done with naps, but he seems to think he is!

  • My transition was pretty easy. A few weeks leading up to the switch we spent a lot of time in her new room.  I also included DD on picking out the paint colors (pick a, b, or c) and the bed spread.  We really pumped her up that the room was her new big girl room and talked a lot about staying in bed.  The first night her room was ready she did great.

I will say I think we really punched the "don't get out of bed" thing home because she won't get out of bed unless we get her.  If she has to pee we get her out, if her bear falls off the bed at 3 am - daddy to the rescue... so there is that.

GL - I know we got lucky with the transition. My sisters both went through hell.  My SIL had to put the lock on the outside of the door b/c their son kept sneaking out of his room.
  • Ours wasn't worse or better really. Similar to Madame Ha, DD was sleeping like crap so we thought we try bedtime without a crib. No change either way. We transitioned her about a year ago. It sucked not having her stuck in a crib but in retrospect I'm glad we did it when she was a little younger than when she got this two year old stubbornness. I have a feeling the transition would be waaaaay worse now.

  • @kimbus22 - NO. He stays awake LATER. Half the nights this week, he didn't fall asleep until 10:00 (bedtime = 8:00). He slept later in the morning those days, but that is actually worse for me.

Nothing I do will make him fall asleep. I tried laying down with him, but he thought that was funny and it made it worse. I take away toys, I don't let him watch tv, no treats, (ie, nothing "special" if he doesn't take a nap), and he just will not do it. And then he goes all crazy on me by 4pm. I'm going insane.
