Yes, too soon. Google will have some good resources and you may want to talk to your pediatrician about medication.

Talk to your pediatrician. Some do have you add it to help with reflux.

Get a different pedi!! It's worth your child's well being, right?

Some pediatricians do recommend it for severe reflux, but I would consult them first before doing it! Dr. Google has some good advice for reflux as well that has really helped us. Such as feeding upright and keeping baby upright after eating, burping after every oz, and taking time to feed so you don't over feed baby :) good luck.

If your doctor is against meds then what happens when you LO gets sick? Has an infection? Is your pedi gonna push there med views then too? Get a new pedi!!!

This is correct but it's usually in conjunction with reflux meds. I would not continue taking my baby to that doctor.

Yep. I've never heard of a doctor who is anti reflux meds, that's just weird! It can be really damaging to lo's esophagus if they have reflux that bad!! Please look into getting a different doctor!

try enfamil AR before adding rice cereal to a bottle, enfamil AR is formula with added rice startch it thickens it and makes it easier for acid reflux babies to keep down.

My pedi says the most recent studies on reflux meds do not show any real results. For that reason, she didn't give me any. LO is gaining weight perfectly so she said to follow all the natural remedies (feed more frequently, burp in between breasts, keep up right for 30 mins and keep him inclided for sleeping) but no meds.

-___- except the meds have helped a lot of babies including my nephew and several babies on this board.

I'll take my doctors advice over anecdotal evidence from the Internet. I'm sure the doctors also gave advice to keep upright while prescribing the meds.

OP, didn't you post about LO having a stuffy nose earlier today?? Reflux can also play a big part in stuffy/runny noses as well. Just a heads up.

We've done it both ways and he definitely spits up less with the meds. FYI.

Our pedi had us use a little rice cereal in her bottle to help with reflux. It has helped her but just make sure you talk to your pediatrician before doing it.

Reflux is very painful. Why would anyone want to watch their LO in pain? The meds relieve that pain. I'd get a second opinion if I were you.

Before the meds (Zantac) my LO wouldn't even eat more that 2oz. He was 2.5 months old and he wouldn't eat because he was in so much pain! This is how my pedi explained it. Meds are necessary since babies just get used to the pain and stop eating as much. Sad.

Nexium brought relief to both of my kids. Talk to a Pediatric GI Doc to get the latest studies on reflux - they are in the trenches of it everyday.

@Chillpr, I'm wondering the same. Like we were talking about the other day, my LO doesn't spit up a lot but does cry to burp like yours. She eats fine, I think? She is BF, but will be getting bottles soon when I go back to work so I'll be able to tell then. I'm actually having an email discussion with our pedi to see if she thinks it's reflux or not. So far the pedi filling in for her said they prob wouldn't prescribe any meds unless it's interfering with the eating, or if I can tell LO is in pain while eating. Let me know what you hear if you talk to your doc either, I'm curious!

My LO has reflux and has been on meds for 45 days, at first his doc didnt want to give any medicine, but once I called her and she heard him crying she knew he was in pain and prescribed it to us. He is a great eater and never had a weight issue, but with the meds he is a much happier baby! @chilpr, he still cries a lot to burp and I can see he is very uncomfortable. That was of the things that made me think something was wrong. You should talk to your pediatrician about it.

All I have to say is Zantac has made my baby feel so much better and happier. Befor reflux meds he would cry in pain after every feeding. Now after 6 weeks of meds he is a very happy baby ( i saw a difference in 2 days). He sleeps more (before would only take 1 nap a day), he sleeps better at night (isn't making anywhere near as much noise. Doesn't choke himself awak with spit up), and has an easier time burping.

I would talk to a different doctor there is no way a baby should suffer in pain if there is a possible easy fix out there.

Yea I'm surprised there are doctors out there not prescribing meds too. Sad. For those with LOs 12 weeks and under, the burping and crying could just be the start of reflux. My LO's reflux didn't get serious until about 12- 14 weeks. He didn't spit up a lot either. He just had pain while eating and refusing half the bottle.

He takes Zantac, three times a day.

LOs reflux seems to have resolved for the most part but of it starts acting up again I will ask her about Zantac.

We discovered later that he may have food allergies which can mimic reflux symptoms. Getting rid of the natural acid in his stomach may have exasserbated the issue so I guess it was a good call on her part.

@cashing I will ask her about the studies at my 4 month appointment and let you know what she says.

my doc actually said this today too.

and.....made it a point to say we would be talking about how to introduce solids and water at our next appt (4months).

You clearly did not read kellymom.com. Ask your pedi how they feel about that site

Didn't have time yet but do you know when it was written or last updated?

I believe it's more current than most Peds on this board it seems. I'm curious what your doctor said about lack of stomach acid and allergies...

This is actually in the aap baby's first year book. It says 4-6 months! I understand it's better to wait for 6, but this was given to me by my pedi. It is what she follows. We all have a motherly instinct and if someone feels like 4 months is on, the aap does say that it's ok!

My pedi also told me he thinks I should start rice cereal at 4 months. (In less than a week). I'm not. I'd rather wait till he's really ready for it. What's the rush, you know?

That's the 2013 version of the book. Just given to me at my first pedi appt. don't worry I looked at the publishing date before I looked through that section to find it! But like @cashingn2 said it's more about your own research and decision than what your pedi says or all the books say. My pedi says 4mos but I already told her we will be starting closer to 6 depending on signs that LO is ready. It is hard because there is publications like this that do say 4 months, some that say 6 months, some that say to give rice cereal, some that say not to. I don't know why I'm rambling. But yes, this is the 2013 publication of it

I struggled with the idea of another med because our LO has been on antibiotics since birth. Enfamil AR has rice milk already in the mix and we have seen an improvement.
