Baby Names

Micah

Hello! I am considering Micah if this baby is a boy. I think it flows well with big brothers Lucas and Joel. My DH is hesitating because he thinks the name sounds feminine... I'm guessing from the "cah" ending. Thoughts? Anyone know any adult Micah's that go by Micah and not Mike?

Re: Micah

  • I don't know any Micahs, but I'd never consider it to be feminine. I like it with your other sons' names.

  • The only Micah I know is a boy.  I can't say I have herad of it ever being used on a girl.

I think it sounds awesome with your other LO's names.

  • I know of 2 men named Micah and they do not go by Mike. If you like the name, go for it!
  • I don't know any Micahs, but I do like it
  • I know one little Micah, and his brother is Noah. I would guess it's the "ah" ending that's throwing your DH off, not many boys names end in "a/ah". The Micah I know does not go by Mike. It's a nice name!

  • Yes, I also love Jonah and DH also thinks it sounds feminine. Must be the ending of the name. Since I already have a "J" name, I am going to fight more for Micah than Jonah. Thanks for the comments!

  • I like the name Micah and as PP said, it goes well with your LO's names. I wouldn't consider Micah or Jonah to be feminine names at all!

  • Well, in DH defense, just think of all those very traditional boy names that are now being used by girls. So maybe the ending not being the sound that most boy names end with is making him nervous? Or maybe he's just being a goofball!

  • I had a co-worker named Micah and he always went by Micah. I love the name! I do know someone who just named her daughter Micah, which made me sad, but it seems like no boy names are off limits these days, that doesn't make it any less of a masculine name.

  • I don't know any Micahs (unless you count the character from Heroes) but I would never guess that it wasn't a boy.

  • Was the character on Heros a cool Micah? My DH used to watch that show and I thought I could tell him if its a good reference.

  • I love the name. I've only known one my whole life. It's definitely a boy's name, on the same page as other "a" ending names like Isaiah, Ezra or Elijiah.

  • I don't know much about Hebrew, but it's clear from all the masculine biblical names ending in -a/-ah that the -a ending in Hebrew isn't always feminine the way it is in Romance languages.  I have met a woman, now in her 30s, named Micah, but it's still much more common as a boy name, and since it's a biblical name I think most people will still identify it as such.

  • My ex-stepdaughter is named Micah (14yo). She's the only girl Micah I've ever heard of.

Like it!  I don't think it's at all feminine!  ETA: I've never known a female Micah.

I teach at a Jewish school, and we probably have a higher-than-normal concentration of boys named Micah or Misha because of families of Russian or Eastern European origin.  Personally, I can't get on board with Misha, but I like Micah.

  • I love the name Micah. It is the name of the boy I kissed in elementary school. DH vetoed it :(

I also have taught a girl named Micah but I don't think of it as a girls name at all. Her mom gave her a boy's name.

  • I know 2 girl Micah's and one was my childhood friend, so for that reason I've always felt it was feminine, but over the years I've definitely heard of many boy Micah's. So now I think of it as either. So even coming from me who originally thought it was a girl's name, I don't think it's feminine enough not to name a boy Micah.
  • DH is Micah. He's the only one I know. Love his name...although Starbucks spells it 'Micha' and people constantly think he says 'Michael'. It's more popular with this generation though, so hopefully that would be less of an issue. I think it goes great with your other sons' names.

  • I grew up with a female Micah, but I know a man who named his son Micah. Those are the only two I've met.

  • I know a 9 yo girl named Micah.......I really don't care for it on a girl or a boy. Just a personal preference thing. I would say boy only
  • There's a female Micah (not sure on spelling but definitely pronounced the same) in Eurotrip. Maybe he's getting that it's feminine from there?

  • I know a married man with kids named Micah. He's very masculine. I've never known the name to be or sound femanine. I think it's an awesome & underused choice. It is amazing with your other kid's names.

  • My DH was supposed to be Jeremiah and then his parents switched to Shawn. Maybe if he was Jeremiah, he would feel differently! I am excited to bring that point up!!
