? for FTM and STM with Anterior Placentas

I'm moving into third tri tomorrow (so excited!) and have finally been feeling LO move around.  My question is - when do you start to get concerned about lack of movement if at all?  I feel him pretty much every day at varying times and varying levels.  He's been quiet the past three days after being hyperactive for the 2-3 days before.  When do you get nervous and call the dr?  I'm trying to not be a nervous nelly here.  TIA!

Re: ? for FTM and STM with Anterior Placentas

  • The same thing just happened to me. I usually feel her on and off every day, but yesterday I didn't really feel her much at all. I was laying in bed all night with a sinking feeling in my stomach because usually she at least moves at night when I am in bed. Luckily today she has been moving more, but still not as much as usual. I am guessing that maybe she moved to a different position which makes it harder to feel her.

If you are concerned at all, I would call your doctor. I have had an AP with both pregnancies, it sucks. Last time, I didn't feel DD move for 3 days (I have a doppler so I knew she was ok), but I called my doctor and they had me come in. The doctor was the one I didn't care for, and he kind of brushed me off as soon as he saw in my chart that I had an AP. I was like "I'm not basing this on how much I think I should be feeling her move, but on how much I consistently feel her move every day." They did an NST just to check on her, and it definitely gave me peace of mind. If you call, even if they don't have you come in, I'm sure they can tell you on the phone at what point you should be concerned and give them a call. I would try to drink some orange juice and relax and see if he starts moving.

  • I did not have an AP with DD and even then, my OB never had me doing kick counts or anything, just told me to be aware of her movements and if I ever noticed a decrease, to drink some juice, lay down, and concentrate on feeling her.

I do have an AP this time and definitely have wondered how I'm supposed to know if I'm feeling a decrease in movement when I don't feel much consistently to begin with.  I actually only just started feeling movement more regularly in the last 2 weeks (I'm 28w2d today).  I have an appt on Wednesday, I'm going to ask just so I know their stance on what I should expect/when they would want to hear from me.

  • I did not have an anterior placenta last time and I do this time. LO is really only active at night, but if I can't feel him, I either drink juice and lay down and see if he'll move or I push on my stomach. My OB said last time that pushing on my tummy wouldn't bother the baby and she was okay with it as long as he pushed back.

  • I have an anterior placenta and now that I'm in my third tri, I have no trouble feeling him at all. He definitely has a schedule and so far I've only had one day that he deviated from it and was pretty quiet but there was still movement so I didn't worry too much.

Every baby is different though so I think knowing the norm for your child and noticing if LO deviates from that is what most doctors want you to be aware of.

From the last thread I read on kick counts, it appears many doctors don't really advocate those nowadays but mine does. I do them when he's most active and she says if he's not moving 10 times in at least 30 minutes when I'm doing my counts that I should call.  My doctor says she'd rather me call and have it be nothing than not call and have it be something that needed her attention.
  • My girls seem to have a schedule for their most active times.  When they fall off schedule I give it a bit before freaking.  I have not had to call the doctor yet.  I was close once...instead, I ate some chocolate far too early in the morning to get them moving.  It worked.  Sometimes cold drinks get them going too.

  • Here are my OB's recs, which are not dependent on an AP... Try not to worry too much!

Between 24-32 weeks: 10 movements throughout the day: any kick, roll, push, turn, or shrug counts!

32 weeks – delivery: You should notice a minimum of 3 active periods throughout the entire day:  babies do not move all day, but you should not go more than 3-4 waking hours without noticing some activity. Once you have gone to sleep for the night, do not worry about movement.

If your baby’s movements change drastically or you are feeling less movement or you are concerned about the baby in any way:

-Lay down in a quiet place

-Eat or drink something cold or sweet

    -Count for 2 hours

-If there are less than 10 movements call the office

  • I have an AP and really only feel him at night. I get little movements during the day at various times but nothing consistent. My OB does have me do kick coutns after 28 weeks, just to make sure I feel at least ten movements in 2 hours. I always get a lot more than that though. I do my counts between 8-10 usually sitting or lying on my couch. If I do a lot I won't feel or notice him. However, I have definitely had days where he is less active. I never got to the  point where I called my Dr. but I do go to bed sometimes waiting for little kicks for reassurance. I agree with PPs, try laying down, maybe some cold fruit juice would help get some movement. And if you are uncomfortable just call your Dr., a phone call can never hurt.
  • Haven't been doing kick counts (was told not to by midwives and I'm 30 w tomorrow). He has his active and quiet days...last night he didn't move much before bed but right now I'm lying on my side and I'm feeling him push out - I placed my hand there and felt a hard round spot! Honestly though I would be worried if I felt absolutely nothing at all for more than 24 h and I was quiet and paying attention to it. I know that days I am busy and on the go I don't feel him at all until I relax for some time. But you know your baby and it's patterns if it's super off id call for peace of mind :)
